Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
So over the course of my apprenticeship, I worked at two different sides of radio production; the Archers and Asian Network. Whilst at the Archers, my role was predominately studio based working with alongside directors and assisting with scripts, whether that be sending them out to actors, formatting or editing them. As Asian Network is live radio, my role completely changed, working on scheduling, music reports, fact sheets for guests and organising projects.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I really enjoy my programme. The warmth I've felt from the BBC took me back; the extent that everyone welcomes apprentices and offers help is second to none. I feel really lucky that I was able to work in two different sides of the business, as I got to understand how production works in both live radio and pre-recorded radio. The reason it doesn't get a 5/5 as sometimes I felt as if there was so much to do scheme wise with the KSBs, it took away from actual tasks to do on job.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
My production skills I have learnt are all new as I had not had any background prior to starting the role. So when it came to editing, scheduling, organising big projects, working in a studio, these were all skills I learnt on the job.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
From the BBC side I would say it's really well organised and well communicated, from the Bauer side it does wane a little.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
A lot of support, an overwhelming amount sometimes!

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
I think the only flaw when it comes to BBC apprenticeship, is that sometimes the managers aren't away of there being certain KSBs that we have to meet. I'm not sure if that's a lack of communication from Bauer or BBC apprentice team not passing key information over to line managers.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
I think it does, but there are certain parts of how the qualification is worded that I think is more suited to local radio rather than production as a whole.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

3/5
There are professional networking events from our Apprentice team based in Birmingham, but in terms of wider events in the midlands, there are a lack of these compared to London and Salford. For such a huge BBC base, I do think Birmingham is overlooked, I hope this changes when the teams move from Mailbox to Tea Factory.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Because people here are so kind and good at their job; these qualities are so hard to find at big workplaces, so the fact that the biggest, international media company, is able to only hire employees that are the best in the field AND genuinely kind people, it shows that the BBC is a work place of worth.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?

Make sure what you're offering is different to others in order to stand out.
