Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I am a journalism apprentice. As part of my role I have moved around teams within my employer so on day-to-day my role can look very different. I could be working in the office researching, writing or editing a story or I could be out and about interviewing people and filming stories.
Some days are very fast pace but some can take a slower pace.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
There are definitely high points and low points of my programme. I have loved working in an industry that I have always wanted to work in and I have worked on some incredible storys.
However some parts of the apprenticeship have been a struggle. I have been taught editing processes I can't practice as I have not been supplied with the right laptop, we have been told of stuff very last minute including changing work patterns. Moving around teams does make the process more difficult as every three months you had to rebuild with another team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes. I have been given access to amazing trainings though it has been hard to practice these skills back in my home team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The scheme is poorly organised with the placements not linking to the training we have done.
There is also an unrealistic expectations put on us in terms of workload due to the lack of communication between the apprenticeship provider and our scheme advisor.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
While within teams I have received a lot of amazing support this has not always been the case from support from the scheme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
While the scheme provides as much as possible, the closure of the course is having an affect.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
None. While some are offered more widely in the BBC, none of these are offered in my home base. I have pushed for this to change but nothing has happened.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
To get a foothold in the industry there is no better place than the BBC.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Think what you would benefit from the course and why the BBC would benefit from you. Remember you are applying to an apprenticeship, not a job or a master course.
