Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I manage a outdoor education property in the Lake District as Site Manager and I am completing a Associate Project Management Apprenticeship HND Level 4.
I am responsible for the Health and Safety, Maintenance, Buildings , Grounds , Security, Vehicles , Plant , Tools, Vessels.
I use the knowledge I am gaining through my apprenticeship in project management to help me organise my work as I have multiple large projects on the go at anyone time manging the site , contractors and maintenance.
My work is in the outdoors in a beautiful location over 11 acres on the Lake with our own boat house , jetties and slip way.
It is a position which is also help and support our two sisters sites when needed Borwick Hall and Hothersall Lodge.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I can use my daily work to evidence the knowledge and skills I am developing with ease matching that against the course content.
Not having to attend a classroom and joining online with the tutor is great because it saves time , travel and is far more convenient.
The lessons are clearly communicated with copies and videos if needed to go back over or if you miss one so you can catch up easy.
Consistent reminders by email of what you need to do or if you have no tasks is helpful when you are busy doing your daily duties.
I don`t need to think too much at all outside the box when putting my content together for my assessments as the project mangers course is a natural fit for what I am doing daily and how to apply it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have been in employment for over 40 years. There is always new things and skills to develop.
My ability to make use of what I have to hand and be practical is always being stretched and I have used those skills when dealing with my course work.
I think daily about the projects I manage and gathering evidence to support my course work.
Using a Gantt chart and sharing that with colleagues whereby they can clearly see my projects and tasks for each one, progress and managing expectations with clear communication has been a good development over the last 6 months.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I have received assistance with onboarding, I`m not the best navigating apps IT etc so I am a slow learner. I don`t feel pressured.
I missed a lesson wasn't a big deal got it completed the next day , I asked for the content and the tutor video received it within the hour and cracked on.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
All the help I need, I generally just get on with it, if I need to talk to my Line Manager he is there. My employer are paying for the course, I`m happy with that, I am also given the time to do it without any issues whatsoever.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
All the help I need.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I am able to underline my duties in my role as a Site Manager which is Facilities Management and doing the qualification is helping me be more specific about my position.
I keep going back to things like my job description and linking that in with things like regulations, powers process procedures compliance , whereas I would usually just get on with it and not consider how important my role is and how all of this plays such a big part of my responsibilities.
I usually just go on auto pilot now I`m looking at the details of what I do.
I am stretching myself to do this as I would ordinarily just get on with things.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
There maybe if I looked for it but I am not interested, I come to work to my job well, enjyo what I do and the people I work with then enjoy going home.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Lancashire County Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I come from 21 years service in the Police and found the transition to work for Lancashire County Council very rewarding and very easy to do.
It was welcome change in politics, environment and so much more.
I feel valued , respected and I am treated very well by my Line Manager and the organisation as a whole and I would recommend anyone who is considering working for LCC to take the plunge.
Working for a Council may not be the most rewarding financially as you can more than likely get a better rate of pay in the private sector than the public but not always, depends what you do I guess.
However if you are not chasing money and would prefer to consider work life balance and all of the above , coming from my own personal experience , I have found that I much prefer to be happy in my work than suffering for a few more quid, position or anything else.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Lancashire County Council?
Consider the fact that at present the Council is going to change with the current review and recommendations sent to the Government, so we may end up with 2 3 or more councils across Lancashire. This also means there may be opportunity for other positions if you haven't been successful in applying or you just missed something you wanted to apply for.
There maybe redundancies coming up too?
Think about the opportunities to get on the job experience and qualifications through apprenticeships which is worth the undertaking to help you in your career developing your knowledge skills and employability for other positions.
Don't put work and career before time with your family, it maybe a great job or career but it is just that, they come and go, family is more important.
