Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My apprenticeship has involved 3-6 month rotations across several HR functions, including HR Helpline, Organisational Capability, Employee Engagement, Operations Management, and currently Resourcing and Talent. On a day-to-day basis, I have supported employees and managers by responding to HR queries and providing guidance on policies and processes, while also contributing to wider HR initiatives and projects. My work has included identifying leadership development needs and coordinating learning solutions with external providers, supporting the rollout of a new employee engagement survey, and assisting with the review and improvement of HR processes and controls across different departments. In my current role within Resourcing and Talent, I support Early Careers recruitment and talent-related activities, contributing to the attraction and coordination of candidates and overall resourcing efforts.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme to a great extent, as it has given me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across a wide range of HR functions. The rotational structure has allowed me to develop a broad understanding of how different areas of HR operate, while also building a diverse skill set through both operational and project-based work. I’ve particularly valued the variety in my day-to-day responsibilities, from supporting employees with queries to contributing to organisation-wide initiatives such as learning and engagement projects. Overall, the programme has been both engaging and rewarding, and it has helped me build confidence, adaptability, and a clearer understanding of where my interests lie within HR.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, throughout my programme I have both developed existing skills and gained a range of new ones. I’ve strengthened my communication skills by regularly handling queries from employees and managers, ensuring I provide clear and accurate guidance. I’ve also improved my organisational and time management skills by balancing day-to-day responsibilities with project work across different rotations. In addition, I’ve developed my stakeholder management skills through working with colleagues across HR and external learning providers.
I’ve also built new skills in areas such as data analysis and reporting through supporting employee engagement surveys, as well as gaining experience in project coordination and process improvement when working on HR initiatives and reviewing controls. Overall, the programme has helped me become more confident, adaptable, and aware in a professional environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well organised and structured, particularly through the 3-6 month rotational framework, which provides clear timelines and exposure to different areas of HR. Each rotation has defined objectives and responsibilities, helping me understand expectations and how I can contribute effectively. There is a good balance between day-to-day operational work and involvement in wider projects, which adds consistency while keeping the experience varied.
At the same time, there is also a level of flexibility within the programme, as I have the opportunity to express preferences for certain teams and tailor my rotations to align with my interests. This has made the experience more engaging and allowed me to take greater ownership of my development, while still benefiting from a structured learning environment.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer throughout the programme. There are multiple support systems in place, including the Early Careers team and an Early Careers Champion, who provide overall guidance, ensure I'm progressing well and also plans my rotations. I am also supported by my line manager within each rotation, who helps set objectives and provides regular feedback. In addition, I have a buddy, typically a previous apprentice a year ahead, who offers informal support and advice based on their own experience. Alongside this, I have a dedicated coach through my apprenticeship who supports my learning and development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. I have a dedicated coach who provides regular guidance, helps me stay on track with my coursework, and supports me in preparing for assessments. They are available to answer any questions and offer constructive feedback to help me improve. There are also structured progress reviews, which ensure I am meeting the required milestones. Overall, the support from my training provider has been consistent and helpful in balancing my studies alongside my role.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualification through my training provider is very helpful in supporting me to perform better in my role. It provides a strong theoretical understanding of key HR principles, which I am able to apply directly to my day-to-day work.
It also encourages me to reflect on my practice and consider how HR processes can be improved, which has been particularly useful when working on projects such as engagement surveys and process reviews.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are a good number of extra-curricular activities available to get involved in at work, including a range of internal networks, regular networking events, and inclusive initiatives. These opportunities allow me to connect with colleagues across the organisation, build my professional network, and gain exposure beyond my day-to-day role.
I am also involved as an Early Careers Ambassador, which has given me the chance to represent the programme, support engagement activities, and connect with other apprentices and graduates. Overall, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved outside of my core responsibilities, which helps with both personal development and building relationships across the organisation.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend the FCA because it provides a well-structured and supportive Early Careers programme that offers a strong foundation for development. The rotational structure across different HR functions allows for broad exposure and helps build a wide range of skills and experience early on in my career.
There is also a strong support network in place, including the Early Careers team, line managers, a buddy system, and a dedicated apprenticeship coach, all of which contribute to a positive learning environment. In addition, the organisation actively encourages involvement in networks, networking events, and inclusive initiatives, which helps build connections across the business and enhances professional development beyond day-to-day responsibilities.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)?
I would advise others applying to take the time to understand the FCA's values and think about how their own experiences and behaviours align with them. It’s important to show not just what you have done, but how you have demonstrated those values in practice, whether through work experience, studies, or extracurricular activities.
I would also recommend preparing examples that highlight teamwork, adaptability, and a willingness to learn, as these are often key qualities looked for in early careers candidates. Being genuine in your responses and showing enthusiasm for both the organisation and the programme can also make a strong impression.
