Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, I support the commercial management of the project by assisting with cost control, forecasting, and reporting, while administering subcontract packages and self‑delivered works in line with NEC contract requirements. On a day‑to‑day basis, this involves valuing work completed, assessing subcontractor applications for payment, monitoring costs, and supporting the management of variations and compensation events. I work closely with site and delivery teams to ensure accurate records are maintained and commercial risks and opportunities are identified early. Alongside this, I continue to develop my technical and commercial knowledge through hands‑on project experience, gradually taking increased responsibility for specific work packages and commercial activities.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the programme, I think it is has been well balanced and I have felt fully supported by my colleagues and line-managers throughout the apprentice so far.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have developed and strengthened a range of skills over the last review period. I have improved my commercial and cost management skills, particularly in forecasting, CVR updates, and monitoring cost against budget. I have also developed greater confidence in managing subcontractor packages, including valuing works, assessing applications for payment, and dealing with variations and compensation events under NEC contracts. My contractual awareness has increased, alongside stronger communication and coordination skills through regular liaison with site teams, subcontractors, and senior commercial staff. Overall, I have become more organised, commercially aware, and capable of taking greater ownership of work packages and day‑to‑day commercial activities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well organised and structured, allowing me to effectively balance project responsibilities with my apprenticeship and university commitments.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer, both professionally and academically. I have regular meetings and guidance from my line manager, who is available to review my work, answer questions, and support my development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive good support from my training provider while working towards my qualification. I meet with my tutor on a quarterly basis to review my progress, discuss my workplace development, and ensure I am on track with academic and apprenticeship requirements.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My training provider provides me with access to learning resources that help me broaden my knowledge and understanding of processes within the workplace and has helped me to develop strength in my job role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Outside of the work place I attend BPART Plymouth, a networking opportunity for construction apprentices from a range of companies in Plymouth. I am also on the Early Careers programme with Balfour Beatty, which offers training sessions, networking events and even the opportunity to go on two residentials to the Lake District. Outside of the workplace, the project team plays 5 a side football once a week, which is a good opportunity to exercise and get to know colleagues better.
