Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The summer internship is rotational so I had the opportunity to work in Leverage Finance and Coverage. In LF my day typically included credit work and due diligence analysis of levered corporates. I attended many internal and external calls with credit, rating agencies and corporates. Additionally, I worked on the LF portfolio and tracked the monthly/quarterly results of corporates and identified the possible credit trigger warnings.
In Coverage my daily role supported the RMs. We work to identify client needs and facilitate banking solutions with the specialist product teams. I also researched possible prospect clients and attended many client and product partner meetings.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, from the first day I was given responsibilities on the desk. Starting out I was not sure how much real exposure to deals and clients I would have. However, at MUFG they really encourage participation from every member of the team. The flat structure means that my ideas and contributions felt valued and listened to from the outset.
I was given tasks to work on independently but provided with the right amount of oversight and explanations. I received feedback regularly and this mean that I could learn and take on more responsibilities as the programme went on.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
During my time at MUFG I learnt many technical and soft skills. In terms of technical skills we were provided with an introductory weeks training around the role of banks, their structure and various product teams. I also developed skills in credit analysis work using credit rating models and due diligence reports. I learnt about internal credit application processes and the various uses and structures of levered banking solutions.
While in Coverage I gained a broad overview of how the bank operates and the many banking products within this. I also gained technical insight into each of these products and how they are used to benefit clients, as well as the associated bank risk / returns.
I developed my soft skills by working with a huge volume of clients and colleagues on a daily basis and presentation skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The Early Careers team at MUFG is very supportive. They were very welcoming and were also there to provide additional support if needed.
On the desk the teams are hugely helpful. People really are interested in you and help wherever they can. It is an extremely collaborative environment and there is a flat operational structure. People were very approachable and if they had time they were always willing to help. Throughout my two rotations I regularly received feedback and at the end of each rotation I had a meeting with my line managers to discuss my time on the team. Feedback was always constructive and was delivered in a very friendly way, always at the right times.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture at MUFG was something that stood out to me from the start. It is a very welcoming place and people really do try to help each other and support the wider team. MUFG is collaborative and team meetings are held weekly where every member is given an opportunity to speak. Asking questions is always encouraged. The structure of the bank is flat and you can have senior management and client exposure even at a junior level. From speaking to senior management people are at the centre of the banks culture and that is clear from day one.
As interns we are encouraged to reach out to people across the bank (associate level and above) and the ability to send an email to a VP/D/MD for a coffee illustrates the time investment they have in their people and their culture.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my time at MUFG. I learnt so much from the highly experienced and capable staff around me. My understanding of banking starting out was limited, but now I have a well rounded view of the industry and MUFG more specifically. Also from a personal development standpoint I have developed my soft skillset and the experience I have gained will be invaluable as I hope to progress into a future career in the industry

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend MUFG to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to MUFG
To those considering MUFG I would most definitely recommend applying. I would recommend to begin by researching various positions throughout the bank. Try identify a role that aligns with your skillset and your interests but be openminded.
Be involved from day one and be proactive with your time. Look out for opportunities to take part in tasks and meetings to broaden your understanding and exposure.
The internship programme is only 10 weeks so make the most of you time. Aim to meet a range of people from across the bank and value the opportunity you have to learn as much as possible. Be inquisitive and take ownership over your own personal and profession development.
