Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role involves assisting in any data analysis task that my manager needs completing. I use software such as Excel and Tableau to extract value from data within the company. I have worked on many different types of teams, my tasks ranging from raising awareness around data literacy, Development of Tableau Dashboards and financial planning/estimating for sector wide scheme.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I think that this programme offers a great alternative to the traditional route to further education. The company compensation offered is excellent and the support network is very strong. My work is structured and of appropriate complexity for the skills that I have and am continually developing on the job.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have learnt many new skills whilst enrolled in this programme. Having access to industry standard software is a massive advantage, allowing me to familiarise myself with tools that will help me throughout my career at no cost to myself. I have always had an interest in data and computer science and so had a strong background of skills, but this programme has definitely helped me develop them further, whether that be during University lectures or figuring it out on the job.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My programme is well structured, with clear goals and requirements set out to me from day one. Even as a relatively new programme the company has developed a good structure for ensuring the programme goes smoothly for those enrolled.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Whenever I have a question to ask, I know who to go to and I am confident that they will help to the best of their knowledge. They leave it up to you to understand and learn what is required of you, but there is always someone available if clarity is required. I appreciate the flexibility of the course.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
My training provider provides good training and offers support sessions closer to assignment deadlines. All teachers are friendly and open to questions. The only downside being that sometimes marking deadlines are not met, leaving my colleagues and I waiting extended periods of time for our assignment results.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I think the training and teaching I receive is very helpful, as it has assisted me in understand the fundamentals of my role and how they act as the building blocks for all best practice. Being a degree apprenticeship the first year was rather slow to get going, as they have to bring people from all backgrounds and skill levels up to speed, but I understand that is an experience only certain people will have had.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Every now and then there will be a professional networking event but I find this to be the most lacking area of the course. We are not required to be in the office for our course, that is at the discretion of our team/manager to decide which can lead to some apprentices not being in the office for months on end. I find the lack of social events or clubs promoted by the company to be strange, considering that professional social skills and relationships are important to development in early careers.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Working with BAE systems offers the chance at secure, stable employment for extended periods of time with one of the most trusted and influential companies in aerospace. The financial benefits of taking this route are second to none. If the idea of being with one company doesn't appeal to you, having BAE systems on your CV will look amazing to employers throughout the rest of you career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
If applying for a degree apprentice specifically, do not expect anything like the normal university experience. You will have a full time role within the business, broken up by occasional "block week" releases where you go to a university campus. I also think the benefit of networking cannot be understated, so if you can, move to a location that will allow you to be in the office as much as possible, to be seen by managers and people who may be important later on in your career.
