Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My apprenticeship at Balfour Beatty has been an extremely positive and rewarding experience, and one that has helped me grow both professionally and personally. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and supported, with the Early Careers team and my placement teams always making time to ensure I was learning, developing and feeling confident in my role.
The rotational structure of the programme has been one of the strongest aspects, as it has allowed me to gain exposure to different areas of the business and understand how a major infrastructure project like Lower Thames Crossing operates as a whole. Each rotation has been well planned, with clear responsibilities that increased over time, helping me build confidence and real, transferable workplace skills.
My managers and colleagues have been incredibly supportive and approachable. They actively encouraged me to ask questions, get involved in meaningful work, and take ownership of tasks rather than feeling like “just an apprentice”. I have always felt that my contributions were valued, and that I was trusted to support the team with important administrative and operational work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Throughout my apprenticeship at Balfour Beatty I have developed a range of new skills, including improved organisational and time‑management skills, professional communication, confidence working in an office and site environment, and a better understanding of how a large infrastructure project operates. I have also strengthened my ability to work independently, support teams effectively, and adapt to new tasks and rotations within the business.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is very well organised. From induction through to rotations, expectations and responsibilities are clearly communicated, and there is a clear structure in place to support learning and development. Rotations are planned in advance, support is always available from managers and the Early Careers team, and there is a good balance between structured training and on‑the‑job experience. Overall, the organisation of the programme makes it easy to settle in, stay on track, and get the most out of the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer. Throughout my apprenticeship, managers, colleagues and the Early Careers team have been approachable, encouraging and always willing to help. I’ve had clear guidance, regular check‑ins, and support with both my day‑to‑day work and overall development. This has made it easy to ask questions, build confidence, and progress throughout the programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a high level of support from my training provider. Tutors are approachable and responsive, sessions are well‑structured, and support is available through regular teaching sessions, learner support groups and formal reviews. I am able to ask questions, receive guidance on assignments, and get help when needed, which has helped me stay on track and feel confident when working towards my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification supports my role very well. The learning is closely linked to real workplace tasks, which has helped me better understand how my role fits within the organisation and how my work adds value. Topics such as organisational structure, stakeholder awareness, regulations, and business fundamentals directly relate to what I do day to day, allowing me to apply what I learn in training to my work with confidence. This has improved my understanding, efficiency, and overall performance in the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Networking events and site visits

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Balfour Beatty because it is an employer that genuinely invests in its people, particularly apprentices and those at the start of their careers. The apprenticeship programme is well structured, supportive, and designed to provide real, meaningful experience rather than just observation. From day one, I felt welcomed, valued, and encouraged to develop.
Balfour Beatty offers strong support from managers, colleagues, and the Early Careers team, making it easy to ask questions and build confidence. Apprentices are trusted with real responsibilities and given opportunities to apply what they learn in training directly to the workplace. This has helped me develop both professionally and personally.
The company also promotes a positive and inclusive culture, with a strong focus on health, safety, respect, wellbeing, and development. There are clear opportunities for progression, and the experience gained provides a solid foundation for future career growth within the business.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
My advice would be to be yourself and show genuine interest in the company and the role you’re applying for. Balfour Beatty values people who are motivated, willing to learn, and keen to get involved, so you don’t need to know everything already – having the right attitude is more important.
I would recommend researching the company and its projects beforehand, particularly the values, safety culture, and the type of work it does. Linking your answers to teamwork, learning, and development really helps, as these are key parts of the experience.
During the application and interview process, don’t be afraid to ask questions, show enthusiasm, and talk about what you want to gain from the opportunity. Being open, proactive, and positive makes a big difference, and once you’re in the role, taking every opportunity to learn and get involved will help you get the most out of your time at Balfour Beatty.
