Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
I work in the communications team at BBC Studios and have been given a lot of opportunities to grow. Each day I can do anything from basic admin, to writing press releases, to analysing marketing plans and giving feedback to PR agencies.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I love the work I do at BBC Studios and what I learn there but I find the learning provider to be poor. The business administration aspect of the course is very unclear and creates a lot of unnecessary work on top of an already busy schedule.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
My writing skills have improved by writing emails, press releases, and reports about media engagement. I have also seen a marked increased in my skill when using IT packages like Outlook and Excel. Outside of my general role, I have been given the opportunity to try and improve other skills, such as presenting. My manager sent me tools and resources to help achieve this end when I brought it up in a personal development meeting.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
Again, the BBC Studios side is very well structured. I have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of teams within the broader communications department and learn how BBC Studios operates as a whole. This has been very smooth. However, the learning provider course has been very unclear and poorly structured, leading to excessive time disparities between what they tell us to do and what we actually have to do to complete it.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
My employer has been very good at supporting me and my goals through the apprenticeship.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

2/5
The support we get varies a lot. The learning coach we are provided is very good but we only have 1 call a month with them and usually it is to talk about our goals and growth, which is less helpful than an analysis of the work we have submitted or will submit. The teaching can vary from very interesting discussions on business administration to 3 hours calls where nothing is really developed and that could have been 1 hour. Finally, the written resources to go alongside the apprenticeship are very poor and confusing. In a recent call the coach told me something that was contradicted by the resources the provider had provided. This leads to a lot of confusion and wasted time.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

2/5
I feel like the skills I am learning in the role are what is helping me get better. I don't find the course that useful.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
There are lots of activities being advertised at BBC Studios. They are not quite as easy to access, however, as they tend to be quite niche things. However, there are many communities that can be joined which are excellent for building networks and meeting interesting people.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?

Yes

Why?

It is the best bits of the BBC mixed with the excitement of a creative giant operating on a world stage. The people and friendly, the work is rewarding and you feel like you are doing something meaningful.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?

Research about the industry and where BBC Studios sits. Once you understand this and can speak naturally about it at interview then you can focus on just being yourself.
