Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I deliver quantity surveying and cost management services throughout the project lifecycle, from pre-construction to post-contract stages. On a day-to-day basis, I prepare feasibility estimates and cost plans, review and negotiate contractor tenders on behalf of the client, use measurement software for tender verification and analysis purposes, produce and maintain cost reports, and prepare payment certification.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the responsibility I feel within my role, I don't feel like an apprentice as such because Monaghans trust their junior members of staff with the same responsibility as qualified colleagues. I am encouraged to contact and speak with the client directly, and attend site visits solo. The support I have received has been great, I am surrounded by people who are at various stages of the apprenticeship, so it is an enjoyable, relatable environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt technical skills through using measurement software such as CostX, and programme software such as Asta Powerproject. I have also developed my communication and professional skills through conversing with the client and contractors.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is very well structured. As Monaghans have been involved within the apprenticeship scheme for so long, they are highly knowledgeable of the pathway and provide a good structure.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
We receive lots of support with the university side of the course. As most of my colleagues are also partaking in the apprenticeship, I always have someone to speak to regarding the work and studying aspect.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The lecturers are very helpful and invested in our success. The want us to do well and help us learn through relating the course to our work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Whilst there are plenty of differences between the course and my role, it is great to have an understanding of the wider responsibilities and industry knowledge. This helps me put my work into perspective and understand the different aspects of the job. Learning about contracts and payment applies well to my role, and it is great to gain a deeper understanding of why our practices are the way they are.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, Monaghans hold plenty of charity social events such as summer walks, raffles, bake sales, quizzes, BBQs etc. We are also encouraged to attend networking events such as RICS Matrics events, where we can socialise with many others who are in a similar role. Monaghans has a 5-a-side football team that plays on a weekly basis. Recently, a few of us ran the Sheffield Half Marathon, which was organised through work. We arranged some training runs prior to the event.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Monaghans Limited to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is exactly the environment you need to succeed in your early career and apprenticeship. You are given independence whilst also being supported when you need it. The people are great and it is an enjoyable place to work. The role is so varied, and you gain knowledge and experience very quickly. You are supported throughout your studies, and many colleagues are completing /have completed the programme, so there is always someone to speak to.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Monaghans Limited?
Don't feel as though you need to revise pages and pages of the job role and be able to recite technical knowledge. Of course, they want to see you are interested in the role and the industry, but more than anything they just want to see that you possess positive qualities that would align with the company's environment. Just be personable, honest, and interested!
