Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On a day-to-day basis, I assist with technical issues both hardware and software. This includes office 365 apps, MFA, provisioning licenses, assisting with providing other access permissions, creating accounts, disabling leavers, processing movers (JMLs). I rebuild laptops, help with password resets, troubleshooting printing issues, monitor and dock issues. I also help with audio, sound and visuals in meeting rooms ensuring this is working before an event or meeting. I troubleshoot internal and consultant Wi-Fi problems as well as ethernet connections.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my role to a large extent as I have learnt so much since I started and have had the opportunity to work with great people in my team and other teams too and have been able to interact with people from all areas of the business naturally due to the role. It has largely improved my confidence, problem solving skills, organisational skills, speaking professionally and networking with individuals. The role has enabled me to develop both soft skills and technical skills and continues to challenge me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

These include communicating professionally with all staff in the company from junior level staff to VPs, directors and the CEO. I have learnt to work well within my team and collaborate with other teams such as infrastructure, project management, procurement, voice team and the storage team during projects. I have learnt how to troubleshoot various issues and how to prioritise effectively based on impact on the business and have leant to add value through the work I do ensuring minimal downtime as much as possible.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is well structured with clear guidance and support available when needed from both the team and apprenticeship mentor at the company. The responsibilities of the role is clear with the ticketing system used being well organised, tickets automatically assigned, good communication through a service desk group chat, an up to date knowledge base, projects with clear milestones and deadlines, support at university through seminars and 1:1 support available with lecturers, clear deadlines at university with enough time to complete assignments and ability to apply learning to the workplace and vice versa.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I do receive a lot of support as I can speak to my mentor whenever I need about work, university and personal matters. I also receive a lot of support from my team whenever necessary. They have helped me when taking on further responsibilities, the opportunity to gain more valuable experience on client site and support when wanting to upskill through the internal skills lab. I have also received support when needing work adjustments for personal matters and religious reasons.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive lots of support when asked from my university tutors and have been helped through 1:1 sessions related to my assignments and computer-based exam. I have been supported by the student support team as well. I understand there is always support available for me.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification has helped me with understanding concepts especially during the networking module, data related modules and programming and how this can be useful to my role. It has helped consolidate my learning by being able to apply knowledge learnt at work to university based assignments, challenges to further understand how my organisation operates and how to improve my approach to customer service.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I have attended networking events at work such as christmas parties, summer socials etc. However, these do not occur too often so I have not had many chances to attend.

Would you recommend FDM Group to a friend?

Why?
I would recommend FDM Group because it has helped me develop so much as individual through the knowledge and skills I have picked up during my time there from my role and from the people I have been surrounded with. I have gained the opportunity to work for an external client as well in the financial sector which I would not have been able to do without their support. The hands on experience in the apprenticeship has added a lot of value to my overall experience and the opportunity to speak to so many people in other areas of the business has consolidated my understanding and knowledge of the business and the world of IT.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to FDM Group?
To be yourself, show enthusiasm, understand company values and how you showcase these, understand what the company does and why you want to be part of FDM, being enthusiastic about learning and developing and becoming better. Showing how you can add value to the company.
