Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I was a placement student in the Alumni Team at FDM Group, where I applied skills in project management, event coordination and content creation to engage former FDM consultants. I supported the design and delivery of alumni initiatives that drive career development and foster lasting professional relationships through targeted communications and strategic outreach.
I worked closely with FDM alumni to understand their career journeys and identify how we could help further their development. In collaboration with the sales and recruitment teams, I helped source and onboard talent, connecting alumni with senior opportunities that align with their expertise.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes - it was a small team and so I had lots of my own responsibilities from the outset.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Lots - I sat next to my line manager all year and was the only person she managed so I got a lot of opportunities to ask questions. My colleagues were also really friendly and willing to help if I ever needed it.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The people in the Leeds office were lovely and always willing to help or support me wherever they could. I definitely formed friendships and felt valued in my role. However morale was not always high around me - a lot of people were stressed and sometimes I got the sense that things were quite political, but I did not feel this way in my role. I think this is an inevitable part of working for a large organisation, and I did not feel that it massively impacted my experience.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed my time at FDM and I am grateful for my time on placement as it helped me to understand what I do and don't enjoy in a role, and helped inform my future career plans. I enjoyed working for FDM as the people around me were supportive and friendly. It has also opened lots of doors for me when I graduate. I did not always find the work I was doing was aligned to my interests, but there was scope for me to focus on the aspects of the role I enjoyed further if I expressed this.

FDM Group is a company where you are encouraged to grow and evolve, and they will support you in the routes you want to go down. It is a fast paced environment where processes are constantly changing. Although this can sometimes be frustrating, it is also a great opportunity to have your ideas heard as things are not set in stone and are very adaptable. They genuinely listen to your ideas and encourage you to challenge things and offer your opinion.
