As a Digital & Technology Consultant at FDM Group placed with a leading health insurance client, I’m currently engaged on a digital transformation programme, scoping out a new internal product alongside senior stakeholders and translating business requirements into a technical roadmap. In parallel, I serve as lead developer on an existing internal platform live to over 20,000 employees, supporting and evolving its core functionality - balancing hands-on engineering with the strategic consultancy expected at this level.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I genuinely enjoy the programme. Combining hands-on client work with academic study has accelerated my development far beyond what a traditional university route could have offered!
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Definitely. Working as a consultant has thrown me into a real mix of roles, from data analysis to software engineering to presenting to senior stakeholders. That variety has helped me grow technical and soft skills side by side, and I’ve become much more adaptable and confident communicating in any setting.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is well structured on both sides. The university timetable is clear, with dedicated study time set aside each week to focus on coursework and assignments. On the consulting side, being placed on a client site has given me a clear day-to-day structure, and frequent touchpoints with both FDM and the client ensure I’m well supported and progressing in the right direction.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The support from FDM is strong. We have a structured mentoring programme with regular meetings focused on career progression and personal development. Beyond that, my account manager is in frequent contact with both myself and the client, ensuring everything is on track and that I have the backing I need to succeed in my placement.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support from the university is excellent. We have a dedicated success manager who holds frequent check-ins to track our progress and address any concerns early. Beyond that, the university has a clear support network in place, with tutors, academic staff, and wellbeing services all easily accessible whenever we need guidance.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification aligns directly with my role. I’m on the Consulting specialism pathway, and the modules cover a broad range of topics that map closely to the work I do day-to-day - from technical fundamentals to business and consultancy skills. This means what I learn at university feeds straight into how I perform on client site, and vice versa.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there’s a strong social side to the company with frequent events throughout the year, ranging from seasonal celebrations to casual get-togethers and networking opportunities. It’s a great way to meet other consultants outside of your immediate placement, build connections across the business, and genuinely enjoy the wider community FDM has built.

Yes, absolutely. Joining straight from A-Levels, I’ve already worked on enterprise-scale projects and presented to senior leadership, which would have been hard to match through a traditional route.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to FDM Group?
Come with a genuine passion to learn. FDM provides excellent training that can launch you into a brand-new career, so the most important thing is to be yourself, stay curious, and bring real enthusiasm - the rest will follow.
