Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a Business Administrator Apprentice working within contextual safeguarding, where my day‑to‑day role focuses on supporting multi‑agency safeguarding processes to ensure children and young people at risk outside the home are identified, monitored and responded to effectively; this involves coordinating and minute‑taking for Contextual Safeguarding Hub meetings, accurately recording professional updates (including police, social care, health and education), maintaining and updating action logs and risk trackers, managing confidential case documentation, and ensuring agreed actions are clearly captured, progressed and followed up, as well as providing general administrative support to the team such as data input, information sharing, quality‑assuring records, and supporting colleagues to ensure safeguarding decisions are evidence‑based, consistent and timely.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my programme to a large extent, as it gives me the opportunity to develop practical skills in a real safeguarding environment while also building my confidence and professional knowledge; I find the work meaningful because it contributes directly to protecting children and supporting effective multi‑agency decision‑making, and I value the responsibility and trust placed in me to manage sensitive information, support complex processes, and continually learn through both hands‑on experience and structured training.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have developed a range of new skills and strengthened existing ones through my programme, particularly around professional communication, organisation and attention to detail; I have significantly improved my ability to accurately summarise complex information for formal safeguarding records, manage confidential data in line with information‑sharing protocols, coordinate actions across multiple agencies, and use systems such as action logs and trackers effectively, while also building confidence in time management, prioritisation and working independently within a high‑pressure, sensitive environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is generally well organised and structured, with a clear balance between workplace learning and off‑the‑job training, and I have a good understanding of what is expected of me at each stage; regular reviews, clear deadlines, and ongoing support from my line manager and training provider help keep me on track, while the structure still allows flexibility to adapt learning to the realities of the role, particularly when work pressures fluctuate in a safeguarding environment.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer, both in terms of day‑to‑day guidance and overall development, with managers and colleagues being approachable and available to answer questions, provide reassurance in complex situations, and offer feedback on my work; I am supported to manage my workload, encouraged to ask for help when needed, and given regular supervision, check‑ins and opportunities to reflect and learn, which helps me feel confident, valued and well supported throughout my apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications, with regular check‑ins, clear guidance on assignments, and accessible feedback that helps me understand expectations and improve my work; they are responsive when I need clarification, provide structured learning materials that link theory to my role, and offer reviews that help me reflect on my progress, which makes the qualification feel manageable alongside my day‑to‑day responsibilities.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification supports me well in performing my role, as the learning links closely to the tasks and responsibilities I carry out day to day; it has strengthened my understanding of professional standards, safeguarding principles, confidentiality and effective communication, which directly improves the quality and accuracy of my work, and it also helps me reflect on my practice, understand the wider context of my role, and apply theory to real situations, making me more confident, efficient and informed in how I support the team and multi‑agency processes.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are some opportunities to get involved in extra‑curricular and wider workplace activities, mainly focused on professional development rather than formal social or sports teams; this includes attending multi‑agency meetings, strategy discussions, training events and networking opportunities with partner organisations, as well as informal team activities and occasional social events, all of which help build relationships across services, increase confidence in professional settings, and support my wider learning and engagement within the organisation.

Would you recommend Cheshire West and Chester Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Cheshire West and Chester Council to a friend, as it is a supportive and professional organisation that values learning, development and staff wellbeing; as an apprentice I feel respected and trusted, provided with meaningful responsibilities, and well supported by both managers and colleagues, and the work is rewarding as it contributes to making a real difference in safeguarding and supporting children, young people and communities.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cheshire West and Chester Council?
I would advise others applying to Cheshire West and Chester Council to be clear about their motivation for public service and how they want to make a positive difference, as the values of safeguarding, professionalism and partnership working are central to many roles; it’s also important to be organised, adaptable and open to learning, as the work can involve managing complex information and responding to changing priorities, and I would encourage applicants to highlight their willingness to develop, ask questions and engage with training opportunities, as the Council is supportive of growth and progression for those who show commitment and a positive attitude.
