Systems Engineer Review

As a Systems Engineer, I support the development and assurance of complex engineering systems by managing requirements, interfaces, and safety considerations across the project lifecycle. On a day-to-day basis, this involves reviewing and structuring requirements, supporting hazard identification and risk management, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards to enable safe and efficient system delivery.

I have developed both new and existing skills. I have strengthened my technical skills in requirements management, systems assurance, and hazard identification, while also gaining hands‑on experience with tools such as DOORS and working against industry standards. In parallel, I have improved my communication and stakeholder‑coordination skills through regular collaboration with multidisciplinary teams on rail projects.

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my placement. I had regular check‑ins with my line manager and colleagues, who were always approachable and willing to provide technical guidance, feedback, and clarification when needed. This supportive environment helped me build confidence, develop my skills effectively, and take increasing responsibility in my role.

The company culture was very positive and supportive, creating a welcoming and motivating atmosphere both in and out of work. Within the workplace, colleagues were friendly, collaborative, and always willing to help, which made it easy to learn and feel included as part of the team. Outside of work, there were also social opportunities and a strong sense of community, which helped build good relationships and made the overall placement experience very enjoyable.

I greatly enjoyed my placement overall, as it was a very rewarding and engaging experience that allowed me to develop both technically and professionally. The work was interesting and meaningful, and I felt well supported throughout. I believe the experience would have been even better if there had been a more structured rotation between different job roles for industrial placements, as this would have provided wider exposure across the business and disciplines.
