Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I was selected to be a Traction Power Engineer in the Rail division of MM. Traction Power is the way that trains are powered electrically. My responsibilities lied in modelling, report writing and data analysis.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a fair bit of responsibility, I was completing tasks for people that some people didn't check as they had seen that my quality of work was to a high standard

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I've learned a lot of time management skills as well as discipline to get up in the morning day in, day out. I've also learnt new technical skills including new programming languages and technical report writing.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

A lot. I always had someone to go to when I needed help with something, and a lot of people would drop what they were doing to help.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Really great. I think since COVID-19, office culture has never truly recovered because of the possibility of remote working, but I think the Manchester office of Mott MacDonald was very keen on being in the office and they were such a nice bunch of people. I was the only Industrial Placement student but I became quite good friends with the Graduates.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I would say I enjoyed the majority of it. Some projects that I worked on, where I was the only low-level employee so I got to do a lot of the interesting work were good, but others where I worked in a large team of graduates and above meant I got passed down some boring and tedious work sometimes.

What advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald

I would say just be an authentic person who has passions and hobbies that lie outside of work and academia. Everyone I worked alongside had interests in various things. And be polite!
