Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an apprentice in the machine shop, I do a few different jobs so I can vary my skills these include, welding fabricating, turning, CNC machine and milling. I do a rotation of these different areas within my department to enhance my skills whilst also going on different placements to different areas to gain different skills such as working on the test vehicles themselves.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the apprenticeship. The first year is full time at college with going on site during term holidays this allows for you to gain the basic skills and knowledge at college whilst gaining some skills in your area. The second year is full time on site with day release to college so you can continue gaining knowledge from college whilst enhancing your skills at work. Third and Fourth year you do not go to college and spend your time specialising in your area and going on different placements. You have some college work to do to finalise your apprenticeship and you are given the support that you need with it through the company and your work based learning managers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
When I started the apprenticeship I had no skills in the area I am in so all the skills I have now have been developed through the time I spent at college and whilst on site. My managers and the team around me were amazing in their support of me learning and enhancing on my skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The structure of the apprenticeship and the support I have received has been excellent from the company. They encourage you to develop new skills and enhance on any skills you already have. If you have any issues you can go to management and they will do everything they can to sort the issue as quickly and effectively as possible.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I received loads of support from my employer with everything I have done including college work and work that I have done on the shop floor. Any issues I have had I have gone to them for support and the support has always been given.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Support from the training provider (Warwick trident college) wasn't the best and I believe they could have done more to support the apprentices they have. This is not JLR's fault and when issues of lack of support from the college were brought up to JLR, JLR did everything they could to get the issues fixed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification I received from the training provider directly links to my job roll and has made transiting into my job roll easier as I already had the basics before I came on site for the first time.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
We have professional networking events for different departments and our department has walked round other departments to see where the pieces we make go so we can develop relationships with those in other departments.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I really enjoy working for JLR. I have gained so many useful skills whilst also making good relationships with the people I work with. The pay is really good especially for apprentices.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
Mt advice would be to do your research into the company and its history for your interview as they ask about it. I would also say to not stress about the interview process and to read every question carefully before you answer it.
