Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a trainee site engineer, shadowing a senior site engineer on site. My day to day job requires setting out and surveying on site, and providing subcontractors with any engineering or design information needed. As a main contractor engineer I also have responsibility on site to ensure processes move smoothly on site and ensure the health and safety on site is good.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The early hours, travelling and lodging away from home takes some getting used to as someone working on site, but as I got used to them, I understood the opportunity that I have a degree apprentice and really start to enjoy the programme. I also go to university one day a week, usually Monday or Wednesday.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I started the apprenticeship with zero site engineering or construction background, so every skill I have learnt since I have joined has been a new skill. I always feel I am developing and I notice myself ticking off mental targets I set myself, and taking on more responsibility on my own.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Bowmer and Kirkland offer many different training courses that have really impressed me. There is also strong communication between my university and place of work. As well as also having progress reviews regularly with both work and uni.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
A good amount, regular training courses to strengthen my knowledge. As well as PDR meetings to ensure I am making progress.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Although I have only recently started my level 6 a few months ago, I have already had a progress meeting and the lecturers are very helpful.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Although some aspects such as AutoCAD modules are helpful for my work, my uni work rarely has a direct link to my day to day at work. Although there are some interesting aspects within my uni modules which I feel may assist me later on in my career.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are sometimes days out of work to socialise and have some fun, whether that is celebrating passing my level 4 with a meal, or spending time as a region at an activity centre. As i have mentioned before there are many training courses within the business as well.
