Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
The role varies considerably depending on what team I was involved with. Typically, can include getting hands on with various products, assembling paperwork to support trials activities, attending trials, customer and supplier visits and supporting new product development using various computational modelling tools.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Overall the programme is excellent, the wide variety of the roles allowed me to find my ideal role and give me a steer as to what I wanted to do post scheme. The academic principles learnt at University have provided a solid platform which are applied daily in my workplace.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes absolutely, communication, report writing, time management to name a few. My computational modelling skills have also vastly improved, from zero experience or knowhow, to proficient and able to adapt quickly to engineering requirements.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is generally well organised, especially on the work-based side. A good range of placements are offered and rotated, and these are shaped by feedback and aligned with the types of products and teams I’m interested in, which makes them particularly useful and engaging. The academic side is generally good; however, there have been a few occasions where timetabling could have been better, including last-minute cancellations or changes to planned dates. Some modules could also benefit from having clearer links to real workplace applications.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive consistent and reliable support from my employer when required. Relevant work-related expenses are fully covered, and there is a good level of flexibility during working hours to accommodate additional needs when they arise. I feel confident that if any issues were to occur, the business would provide appropriate support; however, I am thankful that this has not been required during my time to date.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I generally receive a good level of support from my training provider. The lecturers are very approachable and are able to respond to questions or concerns in a timely manner. Deferred deadlines when required were dealt with quickly without adding additional stress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Overall, the qualification has provided a solid foundation that supports the development and improvement of my knowledge in the workplace. While some university modules are more beneficial and relevant to my role than others, the programme as a whole has contributed positively to my professional development. I feel that I am a more well‑rounded engineer as a result of completing the degree apprenticeship than I would have been without it.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I personally don't get involved with many social activities, although 5-a-side football, a golf society, squash and gym are available to get involved with. There are fairly regular informal social events which I do get involved with on occasion.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BAE Systems has made a significant investment in my development and has placed me on a strong and well-defined career path, with clear opportunities for progression and growth. The apprenticeship scheme has enabled me to gain a specialist degree in an exciting and important engineering field without the substantial financial burden typically associated with student loans, which places me in an extremely fortunate position. Even once I officially complete the scheme (July 2026, all being well), I am confident there will be further opportunities to continue my academic development, including additional modules and potentially a master’s degree, should I choose to pursue one.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Have a positive attitude, ask questions, and make the most of every learning opportunity.
