Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I’m a Production Assistant Apprentice at BBC Radio Suffolk. My role involves supporting the production of live radio and digital content on a day-to-day basis. That can include researching stories, booking guests, writing briefs, editing audio, supporting in the studio, creating content for BBC Sounds and social media, and helping programmes run smoothly both on air and behind the scenes. Because it’s an apprenticeship, I’m also developing my skills across production, storytelling and audience engagement while learning directly from experienced teams.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I’ve really enjoyed my programme and found it incredibly valuable. I love that it combines learning with real, practical experience, because it means I’m developing skills in a fast-paced environment while contributing to live output and digital content. I’ve particularly enjoyed the variety, the creativity involved, and the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals. It has been both challenging and rewarding, and it has definitely reinforced that this is the career path I want to pursue.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve learnt a wide range of new skills and developed existing ones throughout the programme. I’ve gained practical experience in audio editing, scripting, research, contributor booking, studio support and digital content creation, while also improving my communication, organisation and storytelling skills. The programme has helped me become more confident, adaptable and technically capable, and it has given me a much stronger understanding of how to create content for both live and digital audiences.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I would say the programme is well organised overall. It has a clear structure and combines formal learning with practical experience, which has been really valuable. I’ve found that it gives me a strong sense of progression while still reflecting the pace and unpredictability of a real production environment. That balance has helped me develop both my skills and confidence over time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive good support from my employer. I’ve been able to learn from experienced colleagues, ask questions, and get helpful feedback as I develop in the role. I’ve also been given opportunities to take on responsibility while still knowing support is there when I need it, which has really helped me grow in confidence and ability.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive good support from my training provider. They provide clear guidance on assignments and expectations, and I’ve found the support helpful in making sure I stay on track with my qualification while balancing the practical side of the role. The combination of structured learning and regular support has made it easier to understand what’s required and build confidence as I progress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel the qualification helps me perform better in my role because it gives structure and context to the practical experience I’m gaining at work. It helps reinforce key skills, encourages reflection, and gives me a clearer understanding of professional standards and production processes. That combination of practical experience and formal learning has helped me grow in confidence and effectiveness in the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are opportunities to get involved in activities outside of day-to-day work, including social events, networking and wider professional development opportunities. I’ve found these really valuable for building connections, learning from others and feeling part of the wider organisation.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend the BBC to a friend. It’s a great place to learn, build practical experience and develop professionally in a creative and supportive environment. There are lots of opportunities to grow, learn from experienced colleagues and contribute to work that has a real purpose and impact.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
My advice would be to be clear on why you want to join the BBC, show genuine curiosity and enthusiasm, and make your application personal rather than generic. Focus on the skills and perspective you can bring, even if your route has not been traditional, and do not underestimate transferable skills like communication, teamwork, creativity and resilience. Showing a willingness to learn and make the most of opportunities is just as important as previous experience.
