Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role is to ensure the processing of samples and smooth workflow for Diagnostic Cytology. This includes training, preparation and booking in of samples, stock control, troubleshooting, making reagents and staining of microscope slides.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I am learning a lot through the program. I have been wanting to further my career and this is the best way for me to do so without the personal financial burden of traditional university. I have found some aspects of the program difficult, such as managing work, university and family at the same time but I have been up to the challenge. I completed a Level 4 Apprenticeship last year and am now doing my Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have furthered my knowledge in anatomy and physiology which is very relevant to my working field. I have also expanded this knowledge into more aspects of laboratory practices that would not normally be expected for a junior staff member, such as risk assessments and equipment management.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well organised, the program follows the full-time course but tailored more towards those with experience in the field with visit days and practical assessments built into the visits to ensure that no time is wasted. Regular reviews are held with management at work and at university to ensure all needs and targets are met.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
If I have a problem, all I need to do is say. I have had some health issues recently and the support both from the university and my workplace has been amazing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
If I have a closing deadline or exam, all I need to do is say and I will get support to ensure I am prepared for the exam and get the time and support needed for any assignment deadline. However, this agreement is a two way street as I do need to keep on top of the work in the first place.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I am looking to become a Biomedical Scientist, this qualification when completed alongside the IBMS registration portfolio (also included in the Apprenticeship program) will allow me to do so. This is directly helping my career progression, in the short term my knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as other laboratory disciplines has improved dramatically.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are some events such as open days that I have attended as a member of staff in Cytology, these have been informative. This has allowed me to talk about the Apprenticeship program as a way of developing a career in Cellular Pathology.

Yes

It is a good place to work and supports you towards your goals. As a patient the hospital provides world class care and it is great to involved in that.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS Cambridge University Hospitals?
Check out the Apprenticeship program, you will not find a better way to qualify and earn while you do so. Posts within the Trust are very competitive so don't be disheartened if you don't get an interview or the post on the first try.
