Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Placement in a software team, assisting with development, testing, documentation, design (depending on the placement, rotates every 9-12 months). 3 office days (8 hours), 1 day a week for University lectures (remote attendance) and 1 day a week for self study (work from home).
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Pretty good, support is always available, made some good friends, work is interesting and tailored to your ability so you are always learning and capable of tasks, the benefits are also great.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Came in from a generic engineering college course with almost no software skills, now in my second year and have developed a great amount of technical skills and socially.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My year was the first year on a new program so some teething issues that are getting ironed out as it goes, but the general structure is good.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Support is always available from multiple contacts.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Plenty of time, feedback and support in working on University and a portfolio for the work completed in the office.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Definitely helpful and contextually relevant, but I have found I learned more in the workplace than studying for University.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are lots of networking events, the online ones are pushed quite well but some things like sports and socials are not pushed as much, those are more organised externally.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have really enjoyed my time here so far, the quality of work has been great and my skill set has developed greatly. I have made some good friends, the support is solid and benefits are great. Also getting a degree out of it is a good bonus.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Don't expect yourself to know everything, the people here want to develop you into a software engineer, they don't expect you to be fully capable of all tasks immediately. However, as I joined with no coding experience, I would recommend learning some basics just to reduce the learning curve.
