Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Most days I spend in the office doing a plethora of tasks such as design work via software such as AutoCAD and Revit, attending in-person and online meetings, and Liaising with architects and manufacturers through various means in order to produce the best engineering design possible.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my day to day activities and enjoy the variety in my week as I am learning both at work and at university. Sometimes work can be stressful depending on deadlines and responsibilities, however that is balanced out by the periods where I'm not so busy and can enjoy the work I do. Overall, I really enjoy working on different projects with lots of different people within my team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I had no experience in engineering before starting at TB+A, and in such a short time within my first year I've learned a wide range of skills including the fundamental technical skills required when designing and modelling an engineering layout. As well as this, becoming more professional and articulating myself in a professional manner when contacting people within the industry.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship is clearly set out with a roadmap planned for the length of the course, as well as an early introduction to the KSBs I'm required to achieve throughout the course. It is required that I have regular reviews with employers and academic reviewers in order to keep in touch regularly throughout the year and ensure I'm on the right track.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Initially, I found the apprenticeship scheme difficult to adjust to when balancing work life with university, however there is plenty of support provided both within the company and at university. I have regular meetings with mentors both in my team and from training and development mentors throughout the wider company.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Thy provide meetings 3 times a year to review Off The Job tasks and to check in on how general work / university life is. My training provider is very helpful and always available in I ever have any concerns outside of the 3 yearly meetings. I haven't had any issues so far at university however I know where to go if I need any support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Personally, the courses provided at university don't feel significantly impactful to my role. However, I am aware that in my first year the course is going to be very general and more specified to getting everyone caught up as there are people attending from all different walks of life.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Within the company we regularly have social events between the different groups typically activity based, as well as an annual Christmas party for the whole company. Outside of these events there are the occasional meet-ups organised by manufacturers or employee's themselves.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Troup Bywaters + Anders LLP to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The company offers the opportunity to learn skills very quickly and get started on actual meaningful work before you know it. Within my first few months I was entrusted with producing drawings for actual ongoing projects, which is a satisfying feeling knowing your employer entrusts their apprentices with these responsibilities and is a credit to the amount you learn in this company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Troup Bywaters + Anders LLP?
You're not expected to know everything when you first step into the industry, but expected to be interested and keen to learn and improve personally. When applying, don't pretend to be someone you're not, be honest about the skills you have and express those you hope to learn.
