Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role includes costing and supporting the development of projects. This means that it is my responsibility to support with looking at the scope and calculating how much projects will cost. If we manage to do this as accurately as possible it ensure that we eliminate the number of variations and discrepancies that will take place throughout the duration of the project.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I definitely enjoy the programme I am on as it provides masses of support for apprentices like me. By providing the apprenticeship in hand with a university degree it ensures that the information I am utilising at work, I have already been briefed on within the classroom setting. I believe that this kind of learning has significantly supported me within my development as a Quantity Surveyor. Furthermore, due to the fact that Monaghan's is made up of many apprentices, like myself, it means that I work closely with them and use them as role models as to where I want to be in the coming years.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Since beginning my apprenticeship, I have gained a vast majority of skills. Having had no idea what a Quantity Surveyor was or what the job entails when first starting, I feel as though I have now learnt a mass amount. This clearly highlights how supportive Monaghan's is with taking on trainees and working their skills up.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

This programme is one of the most organised programmes I have been a part of. From the way that the company is organised to enrol apprentices and train them up from basics it allows us to learn both quickly and efficiently.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive masses of support on a day-to-day basis by both my work based mentor and my colleagues. This is essential as it means that if I have any queries or questions I can ask them and get clarity quickly.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I am currently doing my degree at Sheffield Hallam University. As a part of this, they are extremely supportive as even when I am not at University, I can reach out and get help when necessary. This is crucial as it ensures that I can get help on assignments and prep for exams whenever I may need.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

By completing a qualification alongside my day-to-day work, I believe it is highly beneficial as it allows me to put my learning into day-to-day practise.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are many extra-curricular activities to get involved with at Monaghan's. Spanning from Networking events, to social activities and even golf days. This means that the company allows you to work collectively with internal guests (from other offices within the company) and external guests aswell.

I believe that the company has looked after me very well. From taking me on from the basics, to now training me so I can converse with contractors, it has ensured that I learn at a fast and efficient pase.
