Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
4 days a week, I am on placement gaining work experience and "learning on the job" in various placements that last 6 months each. So far, this experience has been a great way to learn different skills that the business and industry needs, from technical knowledge to administrative project management type tasks. The other day is spent at university (Blackpool and Fylde College), which is easily the only poor aspect of the degree apprenticeship, as assignments are changed weeks or even days before the due date, lessons are often delivered poorly, and there seems to be a feeling that the college is "making it up as they go along", with students needing to self-teach at home rather than in lessons. However, the rest of the scheme is great and more than makes up for the shortcomings of what B&FC is providing. I would recommend the apprenticeship due to how well organised the placements are within the company and the wide range of opportunities that BAE Systems provides whilst being an apprentice.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I find the work that I do to be interesting and relevant, and don't feel like I am just there to run errands or to do work that other people find too boring or tedious to do themselves. I feel well supported at work and this is extremely encouraging, however the support provided by the university is sometimes non existent and other times insufficient, which takes the enjoyment out of learning on the degree side of the course. Overall I do enjoy my work, however it is slightly tainted by any university days.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned lots of skills, from communication and teamwork, to technical engineering knowledge more specified to an exact skillset. I am pleasantly surprised by how much I have learned in a short amount of time.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Everything on the BAE Systems side of the apprenticeship is very well organised, with clear processes that are followed closely when it comes to managing apprentices, however the organisation at the university is poor, due to assignments changing after they have been set, in class presentation slides not matching those that are uploaded online for revision, and lecturers often teaching inefficiently.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support from BAE is great, with lots of contacts for support financially, mentally and professionally, with learner progress reviews every few months to ensure that apprentices are staying on track. This is very effective
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
The university offers little academic support (for assignments and clarity of knowledge etc.), and when it does it can be insufficient and often leaves you with more questions than you started with. Many students receive contradicting answers to the same questions, which further confuses students as it seems there is no correct way to complete the work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
1/5
I have learned infinitely more on placements within the business than at university, and I find that I can prepare much better for exams and assignments by watching free YouTube videos than learning from the classes.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many networking events, stretch projects that allow me to complete engineering activities that are extracurricular, informally arranged social events with other apprentices, and many other opportunities outside of a regular day to day job.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The experience at work is great and I can't really think of anything to improve in terms of what BAE is providing, however the university needs some serious work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Make sure you are comfortable with the idea of self teaching yourself the degree, and find some good online resources like the efficient engineer and TL Maths etc.
