Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Assistant Building Surveyor at Monaghans I supported the BAC team with inspections, surveys and report writing across a range of projects. My day‑to‑day work included attending site visits, helping prepare technical documents, liaising with clients and contractors and assisting with project administration. I also assisted to ensure our work aligned with relevant standards and Building Regulations while developing my technical skills and experience within the team.
The thing I love is that every day is different and at Monaghan's I was exposed to all areas of Building Surveying to prepare me for my end point assessment.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoyed my programme and felt it gave me a perfect balance of challenges, learning and practical experience. The variety of work keeps things engaging, and the practical experience you develop while at work helped to build my technical knowledge and confidence as a Building Surveyor. Overall, the programme is motivating, supportive and aligned with my long‑term career goals.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Throughout the programme I developed both my technical and professional skills. The programme helped to develop my confidence in carrying out site visits, chairing meetings and meeting new clients as I was exposed to all areas of the business with the support of the senior leaders. I also improved my communication and project coordination skills through regular interaction with clients, colleagues and contractors.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is extremely well organised and you feel supported at every stage in the process by both the company and your peers. A large number of the company have either completed an apprenticeship, or are currently working towards their end point assessment, so there are lots of people around to support you. There’s always someone around to ask questions and get advice from!
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer was extremely supportive while completing the apprenticeship as they have a lot of knowledge around the process. All apprentices have regular check‑ins which made it easy to talk about how I was getting on, and if I needed help balancing apprenticeship deadlines with work tasks.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider completed regular three-way reviews to check-in and ensure I was supported both at university and within the workplace. This avoided any 'gaps' developing as both university studies and work should align. We also had regular APC/RICS sessions to get ahead with our submission for the end-point assessment.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
A lot of the topics I learnt tie directly into the work I am involved in at Monaghans (e.g. building pathology, construction technology, legal & regulatory etc.).
The only comment I would have is I felt I learnt more while being in the workplace rather than university as I was able to practically apply the technical knowledge. Seeing things first‑hand on site helped everything click and make the learning much more meaningful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are loads of extra‑curricular activities to get involved in at Monaghans. We have regular after‑work social events, summer socials and our Supper Club, which are great for getting to know people across the business. There are also plenty of charity activities throughout the year that everyone can take part in and also a charity committee set-up that people can volunteer to be a member of. On the professional side, we’re encouraged to attend industry networking events which is a good way to build confidence and meet people from across the sector.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Monaghans Limited to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I’d recommend Monaghans because it’s a genuinely supportive place to work, especially when you’re early in your career. The team is approachable, helpful and always willing to take the time to explain things or offer guidance. There is also a great mix of hands‑on learning and real responsibility, so you feel like you’re progressing rather than just observing. Plus, there are plenty of people here who’ve been through the same apprenticeship route so you’ve always got someone who understands what you’re working towards and able to help along the process.
The culture is also a big part of it as there are loads of socials, charity events and chances to get involved outside of day‑to‑day work, which makes the environment really welcoming.
Overall it’s a place where you can learn, grow and feel part of a team, and that’s why I’d happily recommend it to a friend.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Monaghans Limited?
My main advice would be to show enthusiasm and a genuine interest in learning. Monaghans is really supportive, especially for people early in their career, so being open, curious and willing to get stuck in goes a long way. What they really look for is someone who’s proactive and keen to grow.
