Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work in the Retirement business as part of secretarial client teams on multiple clients. We work with the client (Trustees) on pensions governance/legislation. Day-to-day work is producing meeting packs, producing documents to fulfil legislative requirements, liaising with clients and being their point of contact within teams, meeting attendance. It is a very people/client facing role with lots of interaction with colleagues and other teams.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my programme on the whole, every quarter brings new challenges and there's a lot of continuous evolvement in the pensions world. I would say sometimes it can be stressful especially during meeting periods, and sometimes it can be difficult to deal with clients.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned a lot about client-relationship development and net-working, it has been crucial to being successful within my role. In terms of technical skills I know a huge amount more than I thought possible, considering when I first started in my role I knew absolutely nothing about pensions. I've developed my collaboration and communication skills as it is key when working within client teams.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
On the whole it is well structured, the onboarding and induction process was structured and I have received ongoing support from the early careers team throughout my course so far. In terms of the actual every day work and how that links with the apprenticeship, there isn't much structure and work has come in waves, but that is the nature of the business.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have felt very supported by my employer, I have monthly calls with a former apprentice to chat about any questions, my line manager and other senior managers have been very supportive and flexible to any changes I have needed. We have consistent updates and communications from the early careers team as well as a group chat for apprentices within my cohort to discuss queries.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider is Davies Learning Solutions, I would say it is a pretty independent course on the whole. I have regular progress reviews with my apprenticeship manager which has been helpful, and if needed they are always open for 1-1 calls to discuss anything. In terms of receiving my qualification my training provider has ensured I understand the requirements and have provided me with documents to track my progress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification has been helpful with understanding the consultancy business and how to work well and form client relationships. It is not specific to my role but has been essential with developing skills necessary for consulting.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are very regular social events in my office, for example, go-karting, pottery painting, baking contests and quizzes. I would say in particular my office (Farnborough) has a lot of social events in comparison to what I have heard from colleagues in other office locations.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
Yes
Why?
For apprentices and graduates, I think Aon makes a great, smooth start to your career and has been a supportive environment for me to develop myself in, given that I joined as an apprentice straight out of college. There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved in work outside of your role and change pathway suited to you.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
If applying to Aon, focus on being true to yourself, through the application and interview process it was clear that Aon are much more focused on hiring you for the person you are over the amount of qualifications and experience you have.
