Graphic Design Intern Review

Day-to-day, I get involved in a whole range of work. This goes from completing small BAU/adhoc briefs, to designing graphic identities for global campaigns. I work within the design and artwork teams to produce work briefed in by others around the company. This could be many things; such as brand identities, motion, illustration, print work, designs for IRL events, or internal comms.

Gymshark gives its interns a lot of responsibility. They build this up as the year progresses, and I'm finishing the year having worked on many projects that could have been handed to someone more senior. Support is provided to ensure interns can succeed in these projects, but ultimately you will work on real-life projects that go live to customers from the beginning.

I have developed my existing software skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign & After Effects. I have also developed my conceptual thinking skills, and my ability to produce graphic identities for real-life briefs. I can keep to strict deadlines, and work well in a professional environment. I have improved my confidence and communication skills.

The support within my team and from my manager has been great, and the wider internship programme is also invaluable. Interns are given a mentor/buddy from outside their team, and the intern programme also includes development sessions to help interns with their progress.

The company culture took a dip during my time at Gymshark, due to the disruptive restructure that took place (this affected my team drastically). But overall, it's a good company culture, with flexible working, various other perks, and the teams around me are great to work with.

My placement exceeded my expectations in the work that I got to do, and the responsibility I was given. I have developed skills that are invaluable as I progress in my career, and I've been surrounded by talented people who I've loved working with and have learnt a lot from.
