Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an apprentice site engineer, my role is to support the engineering team in delivering a safe, accurate and well‑coordinated construction project. Day to day, this involves a mix of technical tasks, on‑site coordination, and learning from experienced engineers.
Typical daily responsibilities include:
Setting out and surveying — using equipment like total stations or GPS to mark out positions for foundations, drainage, roads, and structural elements.
Checking drawings and specifications — making sure the work on site matches the design and raising any discrepancies with senior engineers.
Quality inspections — monitoring workmanship, materials, and progress to ensure everything meets required standards.
Health and safety awareness — supporting site safety checks, ensuring method statements and risk assessments are followed.
Coordinating with subcontractors — helping communicate technical information, answering queries, and ensuring everyone understands the plan for the day.
Record keeping — completing site diaries, taking measurements, logging progress, and assisting with reports.
Learning and development — shadowing senior engineers, attending training sessions, and building technical knowledge through hands‑on experience.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme — in fact, I love it.
The mix of hands‑on learning, responsibility on site, and the chance to see real progress every day makes it exciting and rewarding. I like being part of a team, solving practical problems, and developing new skills that I can apply straight away. The role keeps me motivated because no two days feel the same, and I can see myself growing both technically and professionally.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve learnt a range of new skills and also developed the ones I already had.
Through my apprenticeship, I’ve built practical, technical, and professional abilities that I use every day on site.
New skills I’ve learnt include:
Setting out and surveying using equipment like total stations and GPS.
Reading and interpreting technical drawings more accurately.
Carrying out quality checks and understanding construction standards.
Using site documentation such as RAMS, diaries, and inspection records.
Skills I’ve developed further include:
Communication — working with subcontractors, supervisors, and the wider team.
Problem‑solving — dealing with unexpected issues on site and finding practical solutions.
Time management — planning tasks, prioritising work, and keeping to deadlines.
Teamwork — collaborating effectively and understanding how different roles fit together.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My programme is structured well, and the organisation really supports my learning and development.
There’s a clear plan for what I should be learning at each stage, and the balance between on‑site experience and off‑site training works effectively. I always know what’s expected of me, who to go to for support, and how each task links to my overall progress. The structure helps me stay focused, build skills steadily, and feel confident that I’m moving in the right direction.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
receive a good amount of support from my employer, and it makes a real difference to my development.
Whenever I need guidance, there’s always someone available to help, whether that’s a site engineer, supervisor, or mentor. I’m given clear instructions, regular feedback, and opportunities to ask questions, which helps me build confidence in my role. The support is consistent, practical, and focused on helping me progress through my apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a strong level of support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications.
They are easy to contact, provide clear guidance on what I need to complete, and check in regularly to make sure I’m on track. The feedback they give is helpful and focused on improving my knowledge and skills. Whenever I have questions about assignments or assessments, they respond quickly and explain things in a way that’s easy to understand. Overall, their support makes the qualification side of my apprenticeship feel manageable and well‑structured.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualification supports my role very well and genuinely helps me perform better on site.
The training gives me the technical knowledge behind the tasks I do every day, so I understand not just what to do, but why it’s done a certain way. This makes me more confident when setting out, checking drawings, or solving problems on site.
The coursework links closely to real situations I face at work, which means I can apply what I learn straight away. It also helps me build a stronger foundation in areas like health and safety, construction technology, and site processes — all of which improve the quality of my work and my understanding of the bigger picture.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are extra‑curricular activities to get involved in at work.
One example is the weekly football session after work on Wednesdays. It’s a good way to socialise with colleagues, stay active, and build stronger teamwork outside of the usual site environment. It also helps create a more relaxed atmosphere and gives everyone a chance to unwind after a busy day.
