Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role focuses on providing first-line technical support while developing practical IT skills in a live business environment. On a day-to-day basis, I support users with technical issues, help maintain IT systems, and assist with routine operational tasks to ensure technology runs smoothly across the organisation.
A key part of my role involves responding to IT support requests, such as troubleshooting hardware and software issues, resolving login or access problems, and assisting users with standard applications. I often investigate issues, apply fixes where possible, or escalate more complex problems to senior members of the IT team, ensuring clear communication throughout the process.
At the moment I am on a project with the testing team where I prepare test cases and execute them manually on a website. I raise defects and errors, as well as shadow the test lead to expand my understanding of real testing processes.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
It has been a very positive experience so far. The coaches are supportive, and the team members in the office consistently offer guidance and help when needed.
From the university side, our skills coach has shown strong commitment to helping us achieve the required KSBs, and the lecturers are always willing to explain complex concepts clearly.
The group activities have also been valuable, bringing us together to share ideas and further strengthening our decision making and critical thinking skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Strong attention to detail with careful, thoughtful decision‑making.
Ability to multi-task effectively while maintaining quality.
Improved communication skills when collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders
Consistently working to meet set deadlines and deliver tasks on time.
Playwright with typescript - which is a new building block for testing ( I have learned how to create test cases and scenarios as well as execute them manually)

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The experience has been very positive and aligned with my development goals. The job aspect, in particular, has been highly influential. I began as a member of a POD working on IT support projects, and within a few months transitioned into the Support team.
More recently, joining the testing team has sparked even greater interest. This shift has allowed me to explore more technical areas of the company and adapt to different working patterns. It has exposed me to new approaches, tools, and methodologies broadening my perspective and helping me grow both technically and professionally. The university modules have been highly relevant and closely aligned with the demands of my work so far, which has been a major positive.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
FDM has been exceptionally supportive throughout my apprenticeship journey. From the very start, I have had access to dedicated coaches and team members who consistently provide clear guidance, encouragement, and hands on assistance whenever needed.
In addition to technical coaching, FDM also offers emotional and wellbeing support for apprentices, ensuring that personal challenges which could affect our progress are addressed with care and understanding. This holistic approach makes a significant difference in maintaining balance and staying focused throughout the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The university has been highly supportive throughout my apprenticeship journey. Our skills coach is consistently committed to helping us achieve the required KSBs, providing guidance, feedback, and clarity whenever we need it. Their dedication ensures we stay on track academically while balancing workplace responsibilities.
The lecturers are equally encouraging, they take the time to break down complex and critical concepts, making sure we fully understand the material rather than just moving through it. They are approachable, responsive, and always ready to offer additional help when needed.
Collaborative sessions also play a key role in this supportive environment. They create opportunities for apprentices to share ideas, strengthen teamwork, and develop essential skills such as critical thinking and decision‑making.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The modules delivered so far have been closely aligned with the technical and professional demands of my day‑to‑day work, which has made the learning directly applicable and immediately useful. This alignment has allowed me to understand key concepts more deeply and apply them confidently while working across IT support and, more recently, within the testing team.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are a couple of games available to get involved in. Darts and foosball are the most popular, and they bring employees together during break times to relax, have fun, and socialise.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend FDM Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
One of the biggest reasons I’d recommend FDM is the supportive learning environment. As an apprentice, I’ve been given structured training alongside real-world exposure, which has helped me build both technical skills and professional confidence. The learning isn’t just theoretical, I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned in practical scenarios, which makes the development feel meaningful and career-focused.
FDM also places a strong emphasis on career progression and mentorship. From day one, there’s clear guidance on expectations, personal development, and next steps. Managers and colleagues are approachable and genuinely invested in helping you grow, whether that’s improving technical knowledge, communication skills, or understanding how technology supports business outcomes.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to FDM Group?
FDM values attitude just as much as technical ability, you don’t need to know everything, but you should clearly demonstrate curiosity, adaptability, and a motivation to learn. Be honest about what you know and confident about your willingness to develop new skills.
