Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role within the Sustainability in News Team is to support initiatives and operations within our four priority areas which contribute towards our BBC mission of becoming a net-zero organisation by 2050. Each day varies but since starting my role, I have focused on supporting sustainability data collection and validation which helps us track our carbon footprint.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the programme, I feel supported by my team leader, apprentice network and scheme specialists and really value the ability to enter the workplace and gain valuable hands-on skills while studying for a degree at the same time.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
My communication skills have significantly improved while on the scheme, as I regularly collaborate with staff and stakeholders across the world. I have also gained experience using Power BI and Smartsheets for tracking and data analysis, and further developed my existing Excel and PowerPoint skills. These are just a few of the many skills I’ve strengthened during my 7 months on the programme.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
From my experience, the BBC has been extremely supportive. I have regular 1:1 check-ins with my team manager as well as regular chats with my apprentice cohort and schemes specialists. I felt settled into the organisation very quickly and am aware of multiple points of contacts should I need any support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Our regular webinars, check-ins with tutor and ability to book in office hours with professors have meant support at our university has been good.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I believe studying a management degree alongside my day job has helped me strengthen a range of soft skills, including communication and teamwork. The finance and marketing modules have also been valuable, as they’ve given me new insights to discuss with colleagues across the organisation and broadened my understanding of how different business areas operate.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes there are many opportunities to socialise and network! This includes the Apprentice Community, Young Talent Network, BBC Club and many more..

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I believe the opportunity to work within such a creative yet supportive and friendly organisation is extremely special and valuable. The BBC's culture is wonderful and apprentices (including myself) have great opportunities and experiences working here.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
The BBC really values enthusiasm and a willingness to bring fresh ideas and perspectives into the organisation. My tips for the interview would be to prepare what you’d like to talk about - your past experiences, volunteering, part‑time work, and anything that demonstrates your strengths. Be intentional with your answers by linking your experiences to the BBC’s values, do some research into the organisation, and be authentic in how you respond. In my opinion, showing genuine willingness and potential can be more important than having specific knowledge at this stage!
