Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Streetscene Inspector (Highways), I am responsible for ensuring that the local highway network, public spaces, and associated infrastructure are maintained to a safe, clean, and compliant standard. My role focuses on monitoring the condition of streets and highways, identifying defects, coordinating repairs, and ensuring that the public realm remains functional, accessible, and of a high quality for residents, visitors, and businesses.
I act as the eyes and ears on the ground—linking operational teams, contractors, and management to ensure work is carried out efficiently, safely, and in line with statutory requirements.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Over the recent period I’ve strengthened a number of core skills and developed new ones within my role as a Streetscene Inspector. I’ve improved my technical inspection abilities, becoming more confident in assessing and categorising defects accurately and in line with policy. My communication and collaboration skills have also developed, particularly through working closely with contractors, operational teams and the public, allowing me to provide clearer updates and manage expectations more effectively. I’ve become more proficient with digital inspection tools and reporting systems, which has helped increase the accuracy and efficiency of my work. In addition, I’ve enhanced my problem‑solving and decision‑making skills by dealing with a wide range of issues on the network, and I’ve gained greater understanding of highways maintenance processes, contractor performance monitoring, and health and safety requirements. Together, these developments have strengthened my overall capability and confidence in delivering a high‑quality inspection service.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well‑organised and structured, providing a clear framework for carrying out inspections, monitoring defects, and coordinating follow‑up actions. The scheduling of routine inspections, use of digital reporting tools, and established processes for raising work orders all help ensure that tasks are prioritised effectively and completed on time. Clear communication channels with contractors, colleagues, and management also support this structure, enabling me to plan my workload confidently and respond efficiently to both planned and reactive issues. Overall, the programme gives me the consistency I need to work proactively while still maintaining the flexibility required for urgent or high‑risk situations.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer, which helps me carry out my role effectively and with confidence. I have access to guidance from my manager when needed, and there is always someone available to provide advice on more complex or urgent issues. Communication within the team is strong, and I feel able to raise questions or seek clarification without hesitation. Training, updates, and operational information are shared consistently, which helps me stay aligned with service standards and priorities. Overall, the support I receive enables me to work independently while still feeling backed by the wider team and management structure.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They offer clear guidance on what is expected, provide regular check‑ins every 12 weeks, and are available to answer questions whenever I need clarification or additional help. The learning materials and resources are well-structured, and my tutor gives constructive feedback that helps me understand my progress and what I need to improve. Their responsiveness and willingness to provide extra support when needed make it easier to stay on track and feel confident in completing each stage of the qualification.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification has been very helpful in improving how I perform in my role, as it gives me a stronger understanding of the principles behind highways maintenance, safety standards, and inspection processes. The learning reinforces the practical experience I gain on the job and helps me approach tasks with more confidence and consistency. It has also improved my ability to assess risk, understand legislation, interpret policies, and make better‑informed decisions when identifying defects or prioritising work. Overall, the qualification supports my development by strengthening both my technical knowledge and the broader skills needed to carry out inspections effectively and professionally.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are a number of extra‑curricular activities and opportunities to get involved in beyond my day‑to‑day role. The organisation offers occasional social events, team‑building activities, and staff wellbeing initiatives that help bring colleagues together. There are also optional training sessions, briefings, and networking opportunities that support professional development and allow staff to share knowledge across departments. While the nature of frontline operational work can make scheduling regular activities challenging, there is still a positive culture of teamwork, and staff are encouraged to take part in events when available. Overall, these opportunities help build connections and create a supportive working environment.
