Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I currently work as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor within a building maintenance contractor, supporting the commercial management of construction and refurbishment projects, including high-rise residential schemes delivered in line with the Building Safety Act.
On a day-to-day basis, my role involves managing the financial and contractual aspects of projects to ensure cost control and value for money. This includes preparing and assessing subcontractor valuations, managing interim applications for payment, and ensuring compliance with contractual payment provisions such as issuing or reviewing Pay Less Notices. I also assist in producing cost value reconciliations (CVRs), cashflow forecasts, and cost reports to monitor project performance and inform senior management decisions.
I am regularly involved in administering contracts (primarily JCT forms), including issuing instructions, managing variations, and supporting extension of time (EoT) assessments. This requires a strong understanding of contractual procedures and risk management, particularly on projects affected by regulatory requirements such as Gateway approvals under the Building Safety Act.
My role also involves engaging with a range of stakeholders, including clients, subcontractors, and consultants, to ensure clear communication and effective commercial outcomes. I support procurement activities, including tender analysis and subcontract order preparation, and ensure that works are delivered in accordance with agreed scope, programme, and budget.
Overall, my role combines technical knowledge, commercial awareness, and communication skills to support the successful delivery of construction projects while developing towards chartered status with RICS.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my degree apprenticeship programme. The combination of studying at Sheffield Hallam University and working full-time allows me to apply theory directly to practice, particularly in areas such as contracts, cost management, and measurement. This makes the learning highly relevant and engaging.
However, balancing work and academic commitments can be challenging, especially during busy project periods. Despite this, the programme has helped me develop strong time management and professional skills.
Overall, I find the programme rewarding and valuable in supporting my progression towards chartered status with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have both learnt new skills and developed existing ones through my degree apprenticeship.
I have improved my cost management and commercial skills, including valuations, cost reporting, and CVRs, while also developing my understanding of JCT contracts and contract administration. I have also gained experience in risk management and supporting EoT assessments.
Studying at Sheffield Hallam University has strengthened my technical knowledge, which I can apply directly in practice.
Overall, my confidence and ability to apply theory in real project scenarios have significantly improved.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme at Sheffield Hallam University is generally well-structured, with clear modules that align well with industry practice. The balance between academic learning and workplace application is effective, and teaching materials are usually well organised and relevant.
However, there can occasionally be challenges with coordinating deadlines alongside full-time work commitments, which can impact workload management.
Overall, the programme is well planned and supports both academic and professional development effectively.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive strong support in both my professional and academic development, including guidance from senior colleagues, opportunities to gain practical experience, and exposure to a variety of commercial tasks. I am also supported with time for university commitments and encouraged to apply my learning in practice.
Overall, my employer provides a positive and supportive environment that helps me progress in my role and work towards chartered status with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The support from Sheffield Hallam University has been excellent, with accessible lecturers, clear guidance on assignments, and well-structured teaching materials. I have also received useful academic and pastoral support, which has helped me manage the balance between work and study.
Overall, the training provider creates a supportive learning environment that enables me to progress confidently towards my qualification and professional goals.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification through Sheffield Hallam University directly supports my role by providing relevant knowledge in areas such as contract law, cost management, and measurement. I can apply this learning immediately in practice, improving both my understanding and performance on projects.
Overall, the qualification significantly enhances my ability to carry out my role effectively and progress professionally.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
These include social events, charity initiatives, and professional networking opportunities, which help build relationships across the business. I have also been involved in volunteering activities and fundraising events, which contribute to both personal wellbeing and the company’s social value commitments.
