Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
My role involves supporting the design, construction and maintenance of water and wastewater infrastructure, including pipelines, pumping stations and associated civil assets.
On a day-to-day basis, I assist engineers and site teams with checking drawings and specifications, and ensuring works are carried out in accordance with design standards, health and safety requirements, and environmental regulations. I regularly use technical drawings and digital systems to collect site data, produce simple calculations, and help update records and reports.
I also support site inspections, quality checks and progress monitoring, liaising with supervisors, subcontractors and clients to ensure work is delivered to programme. As part of my apprenticeship, I balance practical, on-site experience with academic learning, allowing me to develop my technical knowledge, problem‑solving skills and understanding of the water industry.
Overall, my role helps ensure that Southern Water projects are delivered to a high standard while I build the skills and experience required to progress as a civil engineer.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I find the combination of practical, on‑site experience and academic learning particularly valuable, as it helps me understand how civil engineering principles are applied in real Southern Water projects. I enjoy gaining hands‑on experience, working as part of a team, and developing new technical and professional skills. The programme can be challenging at times, especially when balancing work and study commitments, but this has helped me improve my time management and resilience. Overall, it is a rewarding programme that supports my development as a civil engineer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Yes, I have developed both new and existing skills during my programme. In particular, I have improved my ability to read and interpret technical drawings, which has helped me better understand designs, specifications and on‑site requirements. I have also developed my communication skills through liaising with external clients and stakeholders, ensuring information is clearly communicated and queries are addressed professionally. These skills have increased my confidence and effectiveness when working both on site and within the wider project team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
Overall, the programme is fairly well organised and structured, with clear expectations around my role, training and development. However, there were some initial issues during onboarding, particularly with ensuring all IT equipment was available and fully set up when I started. This caused some early delays and made it more difficult to get fully involved straight away. Once these issues were resolved, the programme has run more smoothly and provides good support for both on‑site learning and academic requirements.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer overall. My line manager is very supportive and approachable, providing clear guidance and regular feedback, which has helped me develop confidence and progress in my role. Support with day‑to‑day work and learning opportunities has been strong. However, at times it can be difficult to get timely information or responses regarding HR‑related matters, which can be slightly challenging. Despite this, the support from my immediate management and team has been very positive.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
I feel that my qualification supports me very well in performing my role. The training provider ensures that the work I complete aligns closely with my university modules, which helps reinforce my learning and allows me to apply theoretical knowledge directly to real projects. This link between academic study and practical work improves my understanding of engineering principles and makes me more effective and confident in my day‑to‑day role. Overall, the qualification adds clear value to my development as an apprentice civil engineer.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
Yes, there are opportunities to get involved in extra‑curricular activities at work. This includes taking part in charity events, which helps support good causes while also encouraging teamwork across the business. There are also regular networking opportunities held at different offices, allowing me to meet colleagues from other teams, share experiences and build professional relationships. These activities help create a positive working environment and support both personal and professional development.
