Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am currently working within the Data & AI practice. My role sits at the intersection of data analytics and client-facing consultancy, meaning no two days look exactly the same. On a typical day, I might be attending client meetings to understand business requirements and present data-driven insights, working on data analysis tasks using a range of tools and technologies, or dedicating time to my university studies as part of the degree component of the programme. Being embedded in IBM's Data & AI team means I get exposure to real enterprise-scale projects, collaborating with experienced colleagues while continuously developing my technical and professional skills. Balancing client work with academic study has built strong time management and communication abilities that I apply across everything I do.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy the programme. The opportunity to work on meaningful Data & AI projects for real clients, while simultaneously working towards a degree, is something very few routes into the industry can offer. IBM provides a genuinely supportive environment where apprentices are treated as valued members of the team from day one rather than observers. The variety of work keeps things engaging, and the combination of hands-on experience and academic learning means I'm developing both practical skills and theoretical understanding in parallel.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
The apprenticeship has significantly developed both my technical and professional skills. On the technical side, I've gained hands-on experience with data analysis tools such as ServiceNow, Flexera, and Archer GRC, enterprise architecture modelling using Bizzdesign and ArchiMate, and hybrid cloud concepts. Professionally, working on a live aerospace defence project has sharpened my stakeholder engagement, communication, and consultancy skills. I've also earned several industry certifications along the way, including ITIL 4 Foundation, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, and IBM Consultant Profession Certification, all of which reflect the breadth of learning the programme has provided.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is generally well organised and structured, providing a solid framework for development. That said, there can sometimes be gaps between consulting projects, and it is largely down to the apprentice's own initiative to find their next role or assignment. For some this can feel daunting, but on the flip side it opens the door to exploring different areas of the business and taking ownership of your own career direction something I've personally found rewarding.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The support from IBM is reasonable overall. There are regular check-ins with my foundation manager which provide a useful touchpoint, though these could perhaps be more frequent. That said, if I ever had a concern or needed guidance, I feel confident that the right support would be there it's reassuring to know that help is available when it matters most.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The support from the training provider is there if you seek it out, but the experience is very much what you make of it. There is a strong need to be proactive and stay on top of your studies yourself, as it requires a good degree of self-motivation and personal accountability to keep on track with your qualifications alongside the day job.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
Honestly, the qualification doesn't transfer over too directly to the day-to-day work. While the academic content is interesting in its own right, there is rarely a moment where it directly enhances or informs what I'm doing on the job. The real learning tends to come from hands-on experience on client projects rather than the university curriculum. Because this is a degree apprenticeship, the modules are largely set by the university rather than being tailored to the specific work you're doing day-to-day. As a result, the academic content doesn't always align closely with what's happening on client projects. There is a work-based study module towards the end of the programme which does bridge that gap more meaningfully, but for the most part the two strands run fairly independently of one another. It would be beneficial if there were more touchpoints throughout the degree where the academic learning could be directly applied to real work scenarios.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
When I first joined there were a good range of extra-curricular activities and communities to get involved in, which was a real positive of the programme. Unfortunately, a number of these have since stopped receiving funding due to IBM budget cuts, which is a shame as they added real value to the apprentice experience. There are still some opportunities available, but the offering isn't quite what it once was.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend IBM for the excellent client opportunities alone because from early on you are working on real, meaningful projects and rapidly developing both hard and soft skills in a way that few other apprenticeships or graduate routes can match. There is also genuine responsibility on offer, with the chance to support senior colleagues on important and high-profile tasks from day one.
On top of that, the learning resources are outstanding. Udemy is included for free alongside a wealth of IBM's own internal training, meaning there is always an opportunity to upskill and grow beyond what you're doing in your day-to-day role.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
Make sure you come with evidence of how you have stood out from the crowd. IBM looks for people who show initiative beyond the classroom, so think about any side projects you've taken on independently, volunteering experience, or anything that demonstrates you are genuinely keen to learn and develop. Simply having good grades isn't enough showing that you go above and beyond in your own time will make a real difference to your application.
