Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a technical lead in the consulting function of the business, working with clients in the UK Public Sector to deliver enhanced capability allowing our users to operate more efficiently through AI and automation and also gain faster insights through analytics. I spend each week travelling to different client sites and working side-by-side with the user to understand their struggles and support them in this by building software and automation tools.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am on my second degree apprenticeship (level 7 masters) after completing my level 6. These programmes have enabled me to gain real-world experience and technical knowledge that I wouldn't have had the opportunity to at my age and coming from a humanities background. I have a real impact on my clients and have helped them in their day-to-day work through the technology I have implemented for them, this is the most important thing I do and it fuels my passion for delivering meaningful technology.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
When I started at IBM in 2021, I had never written a single line of code. I studied exclusively humanities subjects at A-Level, and when I realised I was passionate about the ethical impacts of technology on the world during this time, I thought I'd be too late to make it into the industry. IBM took a chance on me, knowing I had no technical skills and supported me in my learning and development. 4.5 years later, and I am now a technical Senior AI & Analytics Consultant operating daily as a technical lead obtaining a multitude of skills; solutions architecture, software development, infrastructure, data science/analytics, and consultancy. I'm still learning, but I have made so much progress since starting!

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Now that the partnership with the degree apprenticeship learning provider (university) has been active for a few years, many of the lessons learnt have been applied to make the dynamic highly conducive and productive for learning. The course is well structured and organised to allow for a good balance of hands on and theoretical learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has been both supportive of my studies as a degree apprentice and as an early professional trying to further progress in my career. They have given me several opportunities from working really closely with some intricate and complex clients to nominating me for awards to recognise my work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider actively supports me in working towards my degree, providing me with opportunities to demonstrate my learning through work in my university module/assignments which enhances my overall learning experience.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The university learning I receive allows me to be better at my job, particularly when I introduce data science techniques and concepts I have learnt through my studies to clients.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a lot of people/employee-led extra-curricular activities to get involved with, particularly doing history months (e.g. womens history and black history). Many are designed to raise money for charity or to raise awareness for causes!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have been able to accelerate my career by doing a degree apprenticeship through IBM. They are a fantastic route into the tech industry, and you get a well-rounded perspective of careers through hands-on learning at work, which is supported by formal education.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
Skills can be taught, but character cannot. Demonstrating what you're passionate about and motivated by, in relation to technology, can make you really stand out in CVs/cover letters/interviews. Doing research about the company and what we offer also shows you are proactive, which is a really important attribute!
