Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work as a design engineer within R&D contributing to the development of Siemens Healthineers next generation MRI scanner. Using Siemens NX CAD, I create and refine 3D models and drawings, and support testing and validation activities. I regularly collaborate with cross-functional teams, including SCM and procurement, to ensure designs are mechanically sound, practical, manufacturable, and delivered efficiently.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme and feel that the work I’m involved in is both meaningful and engaging. The balance between practical engineering work and academic learning has allowed me to continuously develop, and I can clearly see how my contributions add value. The apprenticeship has been a great opportunity to grow both technically and professionally.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have continued to strengthen my CAD modelling and technical drawing skills, alongside developing a strong understanding of design for manufacture and assembly, and material selection. I have also gained further exposure to FEA and engineering analysis. With increased responsibility for my own projects, I have developed greater confidence in project management, stakeholder communication, and working with procurement to deliver solutions effectively.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is well structured, with clear progress tracking to ensure development across the required Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours. While the academic workload did vary throughout the year, I have felt well supported in balancing this alongside my role. My employer has been particularly supportive in helping to manage workloads during busier periods.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support I receive from the business is excellent and I feel well supported in both my professional and personal development. My team are highly knowledgeable and always willing to offer guidance, creating a supportive environment to learn and develop. My manager is approachable and proactive, and our regular 1-2-1s provide a great opportunity to discuss both work and university progress.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The support from my training provider has been good, particularly through my workplace coach who helps me stay on track with my apprenticeship requirements and progress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification strongly complements my role, providing the theoretical knowledge that underpins my day-to-day work. It has helped me better understand engineering principles and apply them more effectively in practice.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a range of opportunities including social events, team activities, clubs such as baking, gardening and running as well as professional networking events such as industry conferences, which all contribute to a positive working environment.
