CRMM Biology Intern Review

As a Critical Raw Materials & Manufacturing (CRMM) Biology Intern at Siemens Healthineers, my role centred on supporting the biology team's assay and manufacturing workflows through hands-on lab work and process analysis. This was purely my own project within the internship, though the role itself covers a wide range of tasks depending on the team's needs at the time.
On a typical day, I performed baculovirus plaque assay work, including cell culture and maintenance of insect cell lines, passaging and upstream sample preparation, all carried out under GMP and aseptic protocols in the lab. Alongside this practical work, I used Design of Experiments to analyse plaque assay screening runs, reviewing data across various runs to identify trends and flag outlier results that needed repeat testing.

Yes, I was given real ownership as the placement progressed. I started with assisted training in core lab techniques and moved toward working independently as I built confidence, eventually running and analysing the plaque assay optimisation project on my own.

Yes, I developed both technical and interpersonal skills during the placement. I built on my existing lab skills, becoming more confident and independent in cell culture, plaque assay technique and working under GMP and aseptic protocols. I also developed new skills in experimental design, using Design of Experiments to structure and analyse data rather than just execute a fixed protocol and in identifying process gaps by proposing improvements to the international shipping workflow. Working closely with the wider biology team also strengthened my ability to collaborate effectively, communicate findings clearly and adapt to how a professional lab and team environment operates day to day.

I received a lot of support throughout the placement. My supervisor was always approachable and helpful, and I felt comfortable asking questions at any point, which made the transition to working independently much smoother.
