Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
QC Microbiology Intern responsible for microbiological quality control testing of diagnostic reagents and environmental monitoring of manufacturing and laboratory facilities. Conducts air, water, surface, and particle monitoring activities, performs microbiological analyses, maintains GMP-compliant documentation, and supports contamination control and quality assurance programmes to ensure product quality and regulatory compliance.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. As the department is relatively small, I was trusted with a significant amount of responsibility and was able to work independently on many tasks. At the same time, there was always support available from the team whenever I needed guidance or assistance

I have improved my understanding of GMP requirements, laboratory documentation, data integrity, and contamination control. In addition, I have developed skills in time management, attention to detail and working independently while collaborating effectively with the wider team.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
A lot of the work itself is routine, which can be repetitive at times. However, there was always something to do, which I found enjoyable and engaging. What made my placement particularly enjoyable was the people; everyone was sociable and welcoming. There were also a variety of teams to work with and opportunities to take part in social activities, which made the experience even more rewarding.

What advice would you give to others applying to Siemens Healthineers
Not essential, but I would recommend learning some basic Welsh greetings and phrases, as it can help when interacting with people locally. I would also advise making the most of the outdoor opportunities in the area, as there are plenty of great places to explore during your placement.
