Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
In my role as a Junior Management Consultant, I support digital projects, mainly within the public sector. My day-to-day work involves helping the team stay organised, making sure tasks are clear, and keeping everyone updated.
I run short team meetings to check progress, help plan upcoming work, and solve any issues. I also speak with different people, like developers and stakeholders, to understand what’s needed and turn that into clear tasks for the team.
Alongside this, I help with writing documents and making sure the work we deliver is safe and meets the right standards.
Overall, my role is about keeping things running smoothly, supporting the team and helping deliver projects successfully.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme and find it very rewarding.
It gives me the chance to work on real projects within the public sector, where I can see the impact of the work I’m doing. I also like that every day is different, as I get to take on a variety of responsibilities and learn new skills.
The programme has helped me grow in confidence, improve how I communicate with different people, and develop practical skills that I can apply straight away. Overall, I enjoy the balance of learning and hands-on experience, and it’s been a great way to build my career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve learnt a lot of new skills and also developed the ones I already had.
I’ve improved my communication by working with different people and learning how to ask the right questions to understand what’s needed. I’ve also developed my organisation and time management skills by balancing multiple tasks and responsibilities.
On top of that, I’ve gained experience in running team meetings, writing clear documentation, and supporting project delivery. Overall, the programme has helped me become more confident, adaptable, and effective in the way I work.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well organised overall, with a clear structure that balances learning and practical experience.
There’s a good mix of formal training and on-the-job work, which helps me apply what I learn in real situations. I have regular check-ins and support in place, which keeps me on track and helps me understand my progress.
At the same time, there’s flexibility to take on different responsibilities and learn from a variety of experiences, which has been really valuable for my development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer.
I have regular check-ins with my manager, where I can ask questions, get feedback, and discuss my progress. My team is also very supportive, and people are always willing to help if I need guidance.
I’m given opportunities to learn and take on new responsibilities, but I also feel supported while doing so. Overall, the support has helped me build confidence and develop my skills.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider.
I have regular sessions and check-ins, which help me stay on track with my work and understand what’s expected. The tutors are approachable and give helpful feedback, which supports my progress.
They also provide clear guidance on assignments and are available if I have questions, so I feel supported throughout working towards my qualification.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification supports my role well.
It gives me a strong understanding of key concepts, which I can apply in my day-to-day work. This helps me approach tasks with more confidence and structure.
Being able to link what I learn to real work situations has helped me improve my performance and develop my skills more effectively.
For e.g. understanding business finance (as a knowledge piece) has helped performed better as a commercial analyst, by understanding difference concepts within financial accounting, financial formulas (complex/non-complex) etc.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a range of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work.
There are social events and networking opportunities where I can connect with colleagues across different teams. There are also wellbeing activities and opportunities to get involved in things like sports or fitness-related groups.
In addition, there are internal communities and learning events which are great for meeting new people and developing professionally. Overall, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved outside of day-to-day work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It’s a great place to start your career because you get real hands-on experience from day one and the chance to work on meaningful projects. The programme also offers lots of opportunities to learn and grow, with ongoing training and support available.
I’ve also found the culture to be supportive, with plenty of opportunities to connect with others and get involved in different activities. Overall, it’s a good environment to develop your skills, build confidence, and gain valuable experience.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
I’d recommend being yourself and showing a genuine interest in learning and developing.
It’s important to demonstrate strong communication skills and a willingness to take on new challenges, as the role can be quite varied. Try to give clear examples of times you’ve worked in a team, solved problems, or shown initiative, as this will help you stand out.
I’d also say do some research into IBM and understand the kind of work they do, especially within the public sector, so you can show your interest and motivation.
Overall, be open, confident and ready to learn as IBM values people who are adaptable and eager to grow.
