Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Depending on the department I am currently in, I am doing things that range from scheduling radio shows, packing and sending kit and studio managing R3 or R4 programs, to camera operating and floor managing a news broadcast and rigging a studio set-up for a performance or chat.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Almost everything I have learnt during my apprenticeship is new skills, such as learning how to use specialised media broadcast equipment, such as ped cameras and sound desks, but building on my existing knowledge on different types of camera shots and what they portray.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is structured quite well in terms of the flexibility we have to transition to different departments based on what piques our interest and what would teach us valuable skills, as well as getting our knees deep in real-life work experience.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My line manager and whoever is my team leader/manager of the department I am currently in are always so helpful and supportive, ensuring that we learn as much as possible during our time there while making sure that our training plans are suited for our well-being and interests. I always feel really well-listened to by them.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
They always make sure we prioritise studying over work, so they never fail to give us study time if we feel we need it. I am also supported in my university tasks by the team here.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
By creating a training plan and making sure we shadow experiences that will teach us and allow us to apply the skills we have learnt to the best of our ability and giving us valuable contacts that will help us in the future, providing as many networking opportunities as possible.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Networking events, media operations meet-up, apprentice socials, and many other events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a wonderful way to get your hands into the industry, getting tons of real-life work experience with live programs, music festivals, different departments that all contribute to these shows going out to the public, while working with industry professionals and getting a lot of amazing advice.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Be yourself, it's okay to not have any experience in the field when applying for an apprenticeship because that's exactly what the course is for. Take all the opportunities possible, don't close yourself off to something because you don't think you'll like it because you can always be surprised and like something more than you thought. Always say yes to opportunities, network as much as possible, ask a lot of questions because nothing is a silly question and it shows your curiosity and passion. Ask about any department and ask to shadow them if it piques your interest in the slightest as it opens you up to new opportunities and knowledge.
