Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
The apprenticeship involves placements that you complete within different areas of the engineering business, allowing you to develop your skills and knowledge of the discipline. You then complete a 2 year exit role which will most likely lead to full time employment after the apprenticeship has finished.
Uni is attended one day a week where you complete you bachelors degree in aerospace engineering
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have really enjoyed my time as an apprentice so far at BAE Systems. I have been supported throughout by placement managers and skills coaches to help with my professional development. the opportunities and various projects that I have been given the privilege to work on during my placements have provided me with a wealth of experience which will become useful later in my career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have been able to gain a large variety of new skillsets during my apprenticeship. From manufacturing and fitting techniques, to using industry grade software and facility equipment in a wide range of departments. I have been able to develop my professional skills such as communication, working under pressure or to a deadline, and being able to show adaptability when required.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The apprenticeship structure with BAE Systems is good. Sometimes things can arrive at last minute, but overall the programme is good and has had over 10 years to mature and progress since its first iteration. University structure is not amazing. Things can be quite disjointed and very unprepared at times.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Support from the employer is very good. As an apprentice, you will have a progress review with your allocated skills coach, who assesses your progress and ensures you are doing okay inside and out of work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Support isn't as good as what is provided at work, they can be slow at times to respond to queries or take action on certain things
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Somewhat. The training provided at uni does help, providing the placement that you're in is involved in that area of aerospace engineering
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Yes there are a variety of networking opportunities and Employee Resource Groups that you can join. Some teams hire out football playing fields to play after working hours at certain sites.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Its an exciting place to work. you know what you are working on will have a big impact in the future to the protection of the united kingdom and their allies, as well as being involved in key milestones that in the future, will be looked back on as historical events.
The employee benefits of working for BAE Systems are also very good, and the support that is available for whatever you may be going through on a personal level is excellent as well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Make sure that you have a strong passion for aviation, as this is the at the forefront of what we do. In the interviews that you may find yourself in, the best thing is to be yourself and be relaxed.
