Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor supporting the commercial management of power and infrastructure projects. Day to day, I help with cost control, procurement, subcontractor payments, and commercial reporting, while working closely with project and site teams. Alongside this, I complete on‑the‑job training and apprenticeship evidence to develop my commercial and contractual knowledge.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the role because it gives me exposure to real projects where I can see how commercial decisions directly impact delivery and cost. I like the variety of the work, from dealing with subcontractors and costs to supporting the wider project team. It’s also rewarding knowing I’m building practical skills and confidence alongside my apprenticeship rather than just learning theory.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed new skills in cost control, commercial reporting, and understanding contract procedures, alongside learning how procurement and subcontractor payments are managed. I’m also building confidence in working with project teams, reviewing documentation, and using commercial systems. These skills are continuing to develop as I gain more responsibility and exposure to live projects.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My programme is well structured, with one day each week dedicated to online learning through my college course. During the rest of the week, I support my project team by completing day‑to‑day commercial tasks such as assisting with procurement, cost control, and subcontractor management. I also have dedicated time each week to develop my skills in Excel and other commercial systems used within the team. In addition, I have a weekly check‑in with my line manager to discuss what I’ve learned, raise any concerns, and identify development areas, and each month I assist with cost reporting activities such as creating CTCs and reviewing cost reports.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive strong support from my employer, with clear guidance and regular opportunities to learn and develop in my role. I have weekly check‑ins with my line manager, where I can discuss progress, raise concerns, and identify development areas, alongside structured time for training and skills development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The support I receive from my training provider is very good, as they are always available to help with assignments and any concerns I raise. They provide clear guidance and timely support, which helps me stay on track with my learning and development.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification supports me well in my role, as it helps me understand the commercial processes I am involved in day to day, such as cost control, contracts, and procurement. The knowledge I gain through my training provider helps me make sense of tasks I complete on live projects and apply theory directly to real situations.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are lots of extra‑curricular activities available at work, particularly through the Early Careers Network (ECN). The ECN provides opportunities to network with other apprentices and graduates, attend events such as webinars, hackathons, and workshops, and get involved in wider business initiatives beyond day‑to‑day project work.
