Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a project control apprentice at BAE Systems, you have 12-month placements over the 5 years with one day a week for university. You are put in work placements across the business to cover different functions, tasks and and areas of the company. During this time you are trained on the software and skills needed to do the role. These cover roles in risk, cost management, scheduling and stakeholder communication. Some placements can have different tasks daily, whereas some are more consistent, dependant upon the business area and customers involved.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the programme and have had many opportunities in the business - company travel, secondments and business events.
I enjoy that I am learning across project management and control, while studying for a degree that is all paid for. I have valuable experiences that can be used further in my career. I have also gained knowledge in areas I would have never have guessed.
I have had a varied level of placements within the business - some better than others but this is normal in a business setting.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills within project control, engineering and management with real-world, first hand experience. My stakeholder management skills have increased with working with many different colleagues across the world and my confidence has improved the most.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Due to the programme only being a year old when I joined, there have been many changes in structure and organisation but the overall scheme is the same. The changes have been positive and have involved apprentices opinion and experience throughout. Every year the programmes becomes more mature, the more well organised it becomes.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
BAE Systems have a dedicated Early Careers team that provide support throughout the apprenticeship. You have a direct skills coach for any apprenticeship needs and a team of scheme leaders to support with anything.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The support from the training provider has been hit and miss - some tutors are really good and have past experience in the business or similar, however some don't. Communication has been slow sometimes however, there has always been times to provide feedback and these have been acted on.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification is useful to learn the knowledge in theory to then apply in practice, especially for an apprenticeship. Some assignments have been practical as well with presentations - this has really helped with public speaking and professional presentations.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are many opportunities - Apprentice Councils, sports groups, open events, social events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have been to multiple open events for apprentices and always recommend the business due to the opportunity of it. The salary, travel, benefits and free degree are all positives and put you in a better position for your career. The business is always offering opportunities for further career development and experiences for apprentices and professional staff.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Research the company - find something that really interests you, BAE do a lot more than build planes.
If possible talk to someone who has worked or works for the company to share the business environment and career opportunities - the business is very flexible.
