I work as an Early Careers Software Engineering Apprentice in a backend development team, focusing on metadata systems. My day-to-day work includes studying course material, improving team processes, attending stand-ups, and pair programming to develop, maintain, and debug backend services using technologies such as Java, Clojure, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme very much, as it provides a strong balance between practical work experience and academic learning, supporting my development as a software engineer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have developed my existing technical skills and gained a deeper understanding of backend development, including working with APIs, handling metadata, and using technologies such as Java, Clojure, and AWS in a real-world environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well organised. I have one protected study day each week, and although the course content is compressed from four years into three, the workload remains manageable. I appreciate the opportunity to complete the programme in a shorter timeframe.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a high level of support from my employer. They are very understanding of my study commitments, providing additional flexibility around assessment deadlines when needed. My colleagues are also patient and supportive, and they actively help me to develop my skills and understanding.
