Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
The role involves working with a team to audit a client's financial statements. Most of the day focuses on testing of various balances using software and data analytical techniques. Whenever I need help, I reach out to a supervisor or manager for support. Work is relatively straight forward from 9 to 5:30, but sometimes working longer is required especially during busy season. You can reclaim this time as TOIL though.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The biggest part I enjoy are the people in the company. I've made good friends with my cohort and teams I've been a part of, so I feel welcomed and am excited to come into the office. The main downside is not due to the structure of the programme but the job role itself. Accounting is not a particularly interesting field so I find myself bored pretty often.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt a lot of hard skills to be able to complete my job role like data analytics and software. The company provides a lot of training particularly when you join the firm. There are periodic training sessions every month after that. I have also learnt a lot about communication by working with clients and my team on an almost day-to-day basis.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Clear goals and deadlines set throughout the programme. Before joining, we were provided with an information pack about what to expect in the coming weeks, including any important dates. The company itself has a personalised calendar software, which is pre-populated with every different job, training, workshop etc. that you may have each day. This makes it really easy to know what you will be doing on a specific day of the year, as changes to the calendar are not typically made unless requested.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
There are plenty of opportunities to reach out to others for support. Before joining we were assigned 2 buddies to help us throughout training and answer any questions we may have had. We are also provided with a people manager, who we can go to if we have any problems/queries we need help. Training days additionally set out the other people in the firm we can go to if we require a specific type of help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
We are primarily taught by the training provider through college days. The tutors are kind and supportive so exam content is easy to digest. A lot of resources are provided online, and we are provided with books covering the syllabus.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
Most of the contents of the exam are about how to set up the accounts of a business, or accounting for specific scenarios that may occur. My job role focuses more on the confirmation of these accounts and not their creation, so there is some overlap (particularly about business knowledge and accounting standards) but not much else.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are socials that you can choose to/to not attend, but these are not very frequent. There are also sports teams you can join, but I haven't heard much about it apart from it being mentioned when we joined.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
RSM is a good employer and has many employee benefits. The people in the firm are kind and supportive. Considering I feel content with the work I do and feel like I'm treated well as an employee, I would say its a good company (though I do not have much experience to say otherwise as this is my first job). On the other hand, I would only recommend it to people who have an interest in this style of work because it is not particularly interesting (not a fault of the company, a problem with the field in general).
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
Do heavy research on the field you are going into because with RSM, what you see is what you get. The company is good but make sure accounting is something you would find interesting before applying. If you were not a fan of data analytics or using excel, then you would not enjoy the work they will give you.
