Tax Assistant Review

Usually as a tax assistant, my role is to prepare documents at different stages of the compliance process for more senior team members to review, before they are sent to the client or submitted to HMRC. The bulk of the work involves provisioning the amount of tax that a company needs to pay, as well as working out the taxation disclosures that should be present within the statutory accounts.

I had a good amount of responsibility - not so much that it was stressful, but enough that i had decent oversight over my own work, and worked independently for almost the entire time - past the first month or so. I attended client meetings and communicated with clients, and often worked directly with partners and directors.

My excel skills have really strongly developed, being software that is used daily. More specialist tax software i have become adept with, Alphatax, and i have also developed many soft skills - namely time management, communication, and prioritisation.

I had regular biweekly catchups with my line manager from starting, which i could voice any general queries or concerns. In the office, the team sit together, and everyone is very approachable for queries - pretty much all team members will have a query for someone else throughout the day, questions are encouraged

The culture is really friendly and outgoing - there are socials regularly for the office, team, or service line. There are lots of events that there is the opportunity to get involved in - I play for the office football team, and there has been cricket, softball, netball, and other sports.

I really enjoyed my placement. I got involved in complex work with interesting clients, and broadened my tax knowledge - I had no tax knowledge at all coming into the placement!
The team was really friendly and the culture was great. I was treated as a normal team member, and felt that I got a great insight into what a career at RSM would progress like
