Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

At STS I have done lots of different training sessions, such as, human factors, part-145, SMS training, and CFM-56. I also have had lots of hands on work with minor component changes, engine wraps, engine inventories, wire locking of components, engine movements, changing of engine stand isolators etc. I have had some other training in other departments to help my understanding of them, such as stores and logistics. I have also completed a bespoke training programme at STS over the first 6 months of my apprenticeship and this has got me prepared to go out onto the shop floor. Occasionally I shadow Mechanics and Technicians and the work they are doing to improve my understanding.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme STS Engine Services provide for me to a large extent as all the work I do is enjoyable, the people I work with are very supportive and helpful, and I enjoy working with them all very much. My manager is extremely supportive in guiding us to become the best engineers we can and improve our skills to a level in which is above support seen at other companies.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

At STS I have learned a lot of hand skills, including wire locking, the use of tools etc. Employability skills, Maths skills, English skills, and awareness skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is extremely structured/organised. At the start of a day we get a good plan for what the day could include, the different jobs we could do and the timings. We also have scheduled college days and a good college work plan.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support at STS with lots of meetings about how we are doing. Lots of conversations daily when working to see how well we are getting on. And lots of support when we are having issues in our home lives etc.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provided gives lots of support with our exam and makes it as easy as possible for us to pass our exams. They also book our exams for us which is an extremely helpful thing to have for us.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualifications help me a lot in my work as it gives me a greater understanding of the work I carry out and can help me become more efficient.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We get lots of charity events which we can get involved in, and there is a 'meet & eat' every quarter which is a huge team building event.

Why?

I would recommend STS to a friend as it is a great, team filled company where everyone gets along, work gets done efficiently, and there is a large amount of pride in their work. It makes you realise that STS really is a great company for an apprentice.
