Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Audit Assistant, I work with a diverse portfolio of clients across industries including real estate, consumer markets, financial services, and technology. On a day‑to‑day basis, I support the audit team in evaluating clients’ financial statements, testing the effectiveness of their internal controls, and identifying any potential misstatements such as errors, weaknesses, or indicators of fraud.
My role involves examining key areas of the financial statements and performing detailed testing on underlying data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with relevant accounting standards. Ultimately, my work helps provide assurance that the financial information presented by our clients is a true and fair representation of their position before it is released to stakeholders.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the apprenticeship programme because it is intellectually stimulating and gives me the opportunity to learn continuously while applying new knowledge in real situations. I also appreciate the exposure I get to senior stakeholders from major companies—an experience that many people my age don’t often have. It makes the work feel meaningful, and I feel that my contributions are genuinely valued and important to the team’s progress.
I also enjoy working towards professional qualifications, as it helps me grow and become more employable in the long term. Beyond the professional development, the social aspect has been a huge highlight too. I’ve had the chance to build friendships with people from a wide range of backgrounds, which makes the experience even more enjoyable and rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve definitely developed a range of new skills as well as strengthened existing ones through the programme. Professionally, I’ve built strong analytical skills through testing financial data and reviewing client documentation, and I’ve become much more confident using audit software and working with large data sets. I’ve also developed my communication skills—both written and verbal—through regular interactions with team members, managers, and senior client stakeholders.
In addition, I’ve improved my time‑management and organisational abilities by balancing client work with my studies, meeting deadlines, and managing multiple tasks at once. I’ve also gained a much deeper understanding of accounting principles and the audit process, which has helped me feel more confident and effective in my role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I think the programme is very well organised and structured. We receive a strong amount of training that is directly relevant to our role, and it’s delivered at the right stages of our development, which makes it much easier to apply what we learn in practice. There’s also a clear timeline for when we sit our exams, and this aligns well with our responsibilities within the firm. The balance between on‑the‑job learning, formal training, and professional exams is well thought out, which helps the whole programme feel smooth and supportive.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would recommend RSM to a friend. My experience on the programme has been really positive—it's well‑structured, with training that’s delivered at the right time and closely linked to the work we’re doing. The balance between studying for exams and gaining practical, on‑the‑job experience works really well, and the programme makes it easy to see how you’re progressing.
I’ve also developed a wide range of skills, from analytical and technical skills to communication and time‑management. The exposure to senior stakeholders and large clients at such an early stage in my career has been a unique and valuable experience. On top of that, the environment is supportive, my work feels genuinely valued, and there’s a strong social aspect that makes it easy to build friendships.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
My main advice for anyone applying to RSM would be to do thorough research before starting the process. Make sure you understand the company, its values, and the type of work you’d be doing in your chosen service line. It’s also really important to know what skills the role requires—whether that’s attention to detail, communication, teamwork, or analytical thinking—and prepare strong personal examples that show when you’ve demonstrated these skills.
I’d also recommend staying up to date with what’s happening in the financial world, especially key trends or issues that might impact the industry or RSM’s clients. This really helps during interviews and assessment centres because it shows genuine interest and commercial awareness.
Finally, be yourself and show enthusiasm. RSM values people who are eager to learn, willing to ask questions, and ready to take on responsibility early, so letting that come through in your application can really make a difference.
