Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an Apprentice Water Operator, my role involves supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the raw water and treatment processes that supply clean drinking water to customers. I work as part of the operational team responsible for monitoring and maintaining the Whittle Dene reservoir system, raw water inflows, site assets, and treatment equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the apprenticeship programme because it gives me the chance to learn directly on site while developing real technical skills that I can use every day. Working at Northumbrian Water has helped me understand how the whole water supply system fits together, and I like being part of a team that plays such an important role in delivering safe drinking water. The programme also encourages us to explore different areas of the business, which motivates me to keep learning and push myself.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve developed a range of new skills and strengthened many existing ones. I’ve gained hands‑on experience with operational tasks such as reservoir inspections, chlorination systems, and daily process checks, which has really improved my technical confidence. My understanding of water treatment processes, asset management, and safety procedures has grown significantly, especially around working safely with chemicals and identifying operational issues early. I’ve also improved my communication, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills by working closely with experienced operators and learning how to respond effectively to real on‑site situations. Overall, I’ve become much more confident, capable, and aware within the operational environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
One thing I really appreciate about the apprenticeship programme is how structured and well‑organised it is. Each stage is clearly planned out, with a good balance of practical learning on site, formal training, and opportunities to build wider knowledge across the business. The programme gives clear expectations and goals, which makes it easy to track my progress and understand what skills I need to develop next. Having regular check‑ins, set learning modules, and dedicated time for development helps me stay focused and gives me confidence that I’m building a strong foundation for my future career.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel really well supported throughout this apprenticeship, both by my managers and the wider team at Northumbrian Water. Whenever I’m learning something new, there’s always someone willing to explain things clearly, answer questions, or walk me through a task step by step. I’m encouraged to take my time, build confidence, and focus on doing things safely rather than rushing. The company also provides plenty of opportunities for development, whether that’s shadowing other teams, accessing training, or getting guidance with my coursework. Knowing that support is always there makes a huge difference and has helped me grow much faster in both my skills and confidence.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive strong support from my training provider while working toward my qualifications. They are always available to guide me through each part of the apprenticeship, whether that’s explaining assignments, helping me understand new topics, or giving feedback on my work. We have regular progress reviews, which make it easy to stay on track and know exactly what I need to focus on next. If I ever have questions or need extra help, I can contact my trainer and get quick, practical guidance. Overall, the training provider plays a big role in keeping me motivated, organised, and confident throughout the qualification.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification has helped me perform much better in my role because it gives me the technical understanding that supports what I learn on site. The training provider explains the theory behind the processes I work with every day, such as water treatment, health and safety, and operational best practice. Having that background knowledge makes it easier to understand why tasks are carried out in a certain way and helps me approach my work more confidently. It also means I can link what I learn in the classroom to real situations at Whittle Dene, which has improved both my problem‑solving skills and my overall awareness of how the treatment process fits together. Overall, the qualification and the on‑site experience complement each other really well, and both have helped me grow steadily into the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are several extra‑curricular activities I can get involved in at work, and they’ve helped me feel more connected to the wider business. One of the main opportunities is Just an Hour, where employees volunteer time to support local communities, such as helping with environmental clean‑ups, community projects, or charity activities. There are also company‑wide events like the Innovation Festival, which brings together employees, partners, and industry experts to work on creative problem‑solving and new ideas. These activities give me the chance to meet people from different areas of the business, build new skills, and make a positive impact outside my day‑to‑day role.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Northumbrian Water Group?
If someone was applying to Northumbrian Water Group, my biggest piece of advice would be to show genuine enthusiasm for learning and an interest in the water industry. NWG really values people who are curious, willing to get stuck in, and open to developing new skills. It also helps to demonstrate that you care about the environment, customers, and doing the right thing — because those values are a big part of the company culture. I’d also recommend researching the business beforehand, especially how different teams work together, so you can talk confidently about why you want to join. Finally, don’t be afraid to be yourself. NWG is a friendly and supportive place, and they look for people who will fit well with the team, work safely, and bring a positive attitude.
